Very frustrating that Penn State has no quick attack in the middle. Opponents can focus on blocking the pins. Is that because of inadequate passing, no connection from setter to middle, or middles not quick enough to run it? My impression is that the setter middle connection isn't consistently good. Sometimes it's good (OSU match) but not all the time. Today was pretty bad.

PUR hitting just got better and better. It went from -.031, .211, .324, .485 respectively for sets 1,2,3,4. PUR offense adjusted and PSU defenders didn't. PUR only had 1 hitting error in the 4th set.

That was a must have on all levels. To host an NCAA game at home. To stay within 1 of the top of the big ten etc. Not that I thought PSU had a chance to win the big ten but Nebraska is not going to lose 3 now — which is what they have to do for you to have a shot at the big 10
Hosting a game is Also more than likely Out.

How many of our shots were simply out of bounds? It seemed like an ungodly number. Most of those shots were wide open. Unforced errors are fatal.

Chicoine destroyed us.
Losing her commitment was a big fail.
Oh well, at least we didn't get swept.

I haven't been paying attention to the polls, so I didn't realize that while PSU is ranked #11, Purdue is only ranked at #19. Seems to be a bit strange. I guess we'll see how close the polls are. Course, PSU didn't lose to IND. Those rankings are crazy. Purdue should have been above PSU; I think they're a top 10 team.

No, even with 3 more losses (NE, WI, PU), PSU is still going to end up in the top 16, in my opinion. I think if PSU ends the regular season with an RPI of 17, they will still host in the first round. Assuming they beat who they're supposed to beat: Michigan x2, Michigan State x2, Northwestern, Maryland, and Ohio State. The "RPI Futures" thread on Volleytalk predicted in week 6 that PSU would lose 8 matches and still end up in the top 16 (see below). RPI Futures Rank (last week rank) - Conference (projected wins-losses[rounded] - RPI Score - Strength of ScheduleWeek 5 prediction was: 16. (18) Penn State - Big Ten (20-9) - .6327 - 10 Week 6 prediction was: 15. (16) Penn State - Big Ten (21-8) - .6444 - 14 Week 7 prediction was: 14. (15) Penn State - Big Ten (22-7) - .6447 - 16 Week 8 prediction was: 13. (14) Penn State - Big Ten (22-7) - .6425 - 19

Interesting that PSU was close in all of the sets they lost especially the 3rd and 4th sets where PUR hit significantly better than PSU. It all comes down to PSU hitting. If that could improve by 20-40 pts, PSU could hang with most teams.

And for some really great news, PSU is 100% guaranteed to make the NCAA tournament. Bluepenquin writes..." % chance of finishing in T45 in RPIPenn State - Big Ten - 100.0%"
