This is sort of a dual-purpose thread. There are quotes and stats from the Howard match, but many of those quotes relate as much to the tourney going forward as to the Howard match, so I'm combining them into one post. Here's the link: Penn State Sweeps Howard (Rose: Team Will Have to Play Better to Win Against Dayton)
Here's a quote from Coach Rose:
The article ends with the question: "Could Dayton be Penn State’s Loyola Marymount?" I don't think so, though it's not impossible — as Coach Rose made clear in his comments. What do you think?

I think there better be 4,200 people in Rec Hall tonight. It was sad to see average attendance slip under 4,000/match.
Thanks so much for all of your time on the road to bring us the coach's wisdom firsthand.
The game, uhhh... I don't feel optimistic. This team is missing something. Call it focus, call it killer instinct, call it disinclination to lose, call it whatever you like. It's missing. I hope they win tonight so I can whine about ESPN-3 issues next week.

Nyline, you're a one man Recing Crew! You spew these articles out faster than I can read them. Good work. I now know how much time it takes to put these together, not an easy task.

I really like the part of Russ Rose's quote where he said, "The ideal sub... allows us to move Aiyana around. She can get more swings on the pin than she can on the middle if we’re not passing well."
It was extremely revealing and helped answer a lot of questions and speculations we've all been having regarding having Aiyana in the middle vs the right side, and bringing in Thelen.

It was nice to see him address, what for many of us, has been a "burning issue." And what a surprise, he too saw the issue--even more surprising, I guess, we saw it.

Our pin hitters are swinging hard, so that's a good sign

Oh yes, you're absolutely correct. Dayton also has a lot of hitting errors.

Turner for Dayton is only 5-10 and outhits our pin hitters. It is amazing what you can do with good seting.

Laura Broerman has been providing excellent commentary, succinct and intelligent. I think she is better than most of the pros.

This Penn State team is definitely not a national championship caliber team. No matter how the rest of this match goes, they just don't have anywhere close to the consistency needed to win four tough matches.
And, of course, they may not make it out of their own court.
Wasn't there a time years ago when we dropped an early round match to Tennessee.

The team has no consistency, or personality. Brianna too predictable on serves, and takes too long to deliver the ball. We're getting schooled by a smaller, quicker team, with quick serves and great passing.
Russ keeps altering the lineups, hoping to find something. He must be as frustrated as we and the team are.
Dayton came alive in the first set just about the time the male student announcer said that the winner of the Hawaii/Texas A&M match would meet Penn State in the first round of the Des Moines Regional. Karma?
