I hope the team does not get down on itself as the experts on this site have gotten down on the team. Things will get better. Leadership will arise and the "grit" suggestion soon seemingly in error.

I finally had a chance to watch the NC match this afternoon. Strange match. PSU had control of every set and had the match won but headed to the locker room two points too early! Rotation 4 (Back row – Rivera, White, Lee. Front row – Frantti, Washington, Weiskercher/Detering) had a disastrous match. They yielded an astonishingly low side out rate of 34.4%. They managed to side out 11 times while giving up 21 points on the opponents serve. Adding in the 13 points yielded on their own serve, rotation 4 accounted for 34 of NC’s 102 points (= 1/3 of total). They were on the floor for both the 7 point NC run that stole set 4 and the 4 point NC run that closed out set 5. Excellent observation. This is when all 3 are stacked on the left and Haleigh needs or looks to run the slide as she passes Bryanna. As we pass 2 here they kept serving Ali deep in the 5 or down the line. She was passing to the middle of the court way too much and that negated the slide and pulled Bryanna off the net. Because we don't have a D ball attack that leaves Ali as the sole attacker . The block and defense is easy to set up. However, take care of the pass and this should be one of our strongest and smoothest rotations.

Agree with the patient, optimistic outlook. We are talking about young ladies who are mostly teenagers now. There will be growing pains. On an optimistic outlook, think about what happened in Rio. The Chinese volleyball team barely made it out of the group play, but they got the GOLD.

Not having seen the match but having reviewed Game Tracker, I thought that Coles, the NC server might have been their Micha. But having seen the match, although Coles has a good jump serve, the passing was reasonably decent. Most of the points were lost on kill attempts by Ali and Haleigh plus a couple of ill-advised dump attempts by Brianna. One other bit of strangeness came in set 2 when, after two consecutive Penn State points on Simone Lee’s serve put us up 22-20, Russ decided to sub Lainey for Simone. Perhaps he was guarding the lead by going with a more consistent server. Unfortunately, it backfired when Lainey’s serve was just out and NC was started on a 5-point run that took that set. (Rotation 2 for PSU this time). North Carolina has a good team, but Penn State is better. Let’s hope that this match was an anomaly. I agree. I hope the coaching staff takes a hard look at the personnel they had on the floor for PSU's last 5 losses and who was on the floor in the beginning of the 2015 season when they were playing well: Stanford sweep, first match against national Champion Nebraska which went 5 and we should have won; 5 set win over final four participant Minnesota, three set sweep over Wisconsin, etc.). Some kids just know how to gut out a win and bring intangibles to the court.

Off the top of my head, the Libero position is the biggest change that comes to mind. Regrettably, the box scores don't show which players were healthy as the season began and those who weren't as the season drew to a close.

I was there Saturday and the big impression I walked away with was what a hard time we had getting through their blocks, and how ineffective our block was by comparison. I'm not sure if it was poor choices by the setters, bad angles by the hitters, or just lack of power (outside of Simone), but that seemed like the biggest problem we faced down the stretch.
