Interesting notes from the AVCA D1 Poll site...
Others receiving votes and listed on two or more ballots: Missouri 68; Purdue 50; Illinois 37; Arizona 14; Colorado 13; Iowa 9; Texas A&M 4
Seven teams mentioned on only one ballot for a total of 14 combined points.
Dropped Out: Illinois 24
So, not sure when Purdue dropped off, but they are closer now than IL.
Not sure WHEN IA was EVER getting votes. Wow. Folks are noticing...

This is crazy. I just checked the "Top 25 Results" thread which vballfreak808 creates every week on VT. It looks like, even with 4 losses in a row, #11 Penn State may actually get ranked higher on Monday's AVCA Poll. I'd say a top #10 rankning for sure, perhaps even as high as #9. Can't get punished for losing to the 3 best teams in the country. Here's what happened this week. #8 Washington, had an upset loss to #20 Oregon. #9 UCLA had an upset loss to unranked Arizona. #10 Florida St. had 2 upset losses to unranked NC State and #12 N. Carolina. #12 N. Carolina beat #10 Florida St. (NC will probably get the #8 spot). Read more here: volleytalk.proboards.com/thread/66364/top-25-results-oct-nov

Well maybe style points for losing to Neb in 5? Does this ranking bode well for hosting in the first two rounds?

Well maybe style points for losing to Neb in 5? Does this ranking bode well for hosting in the first two rounds? It depends on how close the NCAA stays to RPI. I don't believe that PSU is in the top 20 in the RPI. If they don't host, how far will they have to fly?

Given the inconsistency of the PSU women it is hard to imagine that they are considered in the top ten. Is this a down year for vb nationwide beyond the first 3 or 4 teams? And I do not know the Texas, Kansas crowd but wonder if Wisconsin is perhaps a little over rated?

Historically, how much does the tournament committee rely on the RPI? I suppose a different way to look at the question is, who is more deserving to host the first two rounds? PSU compared with, for example, Michigan, Florida State, or Utah (rated 17, 18 and 19 in this week's rankings). I am biased but think that PSU's resume might match up pretty well as compared with those three teams.

And I do not know the Texas, Kansas crowd but wonder if Wisconsin is perhaps a little over rated? The AVCA Poll doesn't really say much, when it comes to seeding and figuring out the brackets in the tournament playoffs. I would recommend you look at RPI only, which at this moment is around #20 for Penn State. This is a much more representative number of how good PSU really is this year. After the top 4 teams, there is a huge drop off according to all the math geeks on VT. I think WI and TX are both overrated, but that's just my opinion.

I am biased but think that PSU's resume might match up pretty well as compared with those three teams. It's not the only factor, but it is a major one. Another big factor is distance between schools and hosting sites. The good thing for PSU is that there are usually several playoff-bound schools located within 450 miles of State College. That's the max driving distance allowed by the NCAA for a host site to be considered. Whereas, schools on the West coast with lower RPI's, which have large distances between them, usually get shafted.
