Looking for confirmation on this, just found on Volleytalk a few minutes ago. Listed as a 6'1" OH from Colorado. Perhaps as important, Michaela is a redhead! As copied from www.virginiasports.com/sports/w-volley/spec-rel/111616aaa.html Michaela Putnicki is an outside hitter that started as a freshman at Castle View High School, before playing her last three years and starting two at Lewis Palmer High School. A 2016 AVCA Under Armor All-American and First Team All-State Selection, Putnicki helped lead LPHS to two State Championships (2014 & 2016), with perfect 29-0 seasons in those years, and a runner-up finish in 2015. A PrepVolleyball Senior Ace and No. 71 recruit in the nation by the organization, she finished with a team-best 309 kills, .320 hitting percentage and 222 digs as a senior. As a junior, Putnicki earned Pikes Peak Athletic Conference Second Team honors and was First Team Academic All-State. Putnicki played club volleyball for Colorado Juniors. Hohenshelt on Putnicki: “We are very excited to get a six-rotation player of Michaela’s caliber. She has proven that she can pass, block and attack with the best players in the country. She is a blue-collar kid who comes from a family that believes in hard work and I love that about her. She has had a great senior year and I would expect her to be in the running for the Colorado Gatorade State Player of the Year.” www.maxpreps.com/m/career/default.aspx?careerid=1eef7755-b524-e411-b4d2-002655e6c45a

Michaela won the Colorado Gatorade POY. She would probably benefit from a red shirt season to get stronger and adjust to the speed of the college game. Looks to have very good athleticism and will make PSU better. At only 6-1 she could really benefit with one more growth spurt.

Looks like she might have become available because Virginia's coach departed. She's at least the second Colorado Gatorade player of the year to come to PSU. Not sure about Erica Denny. Apparently, Colorado players feel at home with PSU's valley between the little mountains.

This girl is super skilled already, has a good jump and will be ready to compete in Sept. The much needed extra OH that PSU desired to give Frantti and Lee a breather or two. Courtney was 6'1ish too.

In addition, it would be beneficial for the talented 2018 crew to have a 6 rotation OH with some experience when they arrive.

The Virginia coach resigned. That gives signees a free pass. We got Micha from Tulsa in pretty much the same way.

It's no different from any other transfer in women's volleyball -- no need to sit out unless in-conference. I'm not even sure she needed a release, given that she never actually enrolled at UVA. But if she did need one, she obviously received it -- just like Paulina did when she decided to transfer to Texas -- much, much later in the year. Not sure change of coach has anything to do with it -- it may, but I think that's just an argument for the school granting the release.

Her club team, Colorado Juniors, posted coloradojuniors.org"Michaela Putnicki fully released and committed to Penn State! Congrats Putt!" Great to have more OHs on the roster.

Does anyone know why this happened? "Dennis Hohenshelt Resigns as Virginia Head Volleyball Coach (Jan 19, 2017)." I know his contract was set to expire on Jan 25, 2017.

Does anyone know why this happened? "Dennis Hohenshelt Resigns as Virginia Head Volleyball Coach (Jan 19, 2017)." I know his contract was set to expire on Jan 25, 2017. This article says "Hohenshelt’s contract was set to expire Jan. 25, 2017. Virginia will fulfill the financial obligations of the contract using athletics department funds." The athletic director was "acting," so maybe Dennis had been in renewal discussions with the previous AD and things got put on hold. That seems most likely to me. Maybe there was a clause that somehow triggered additional payments if Dennis wasn't renewed, and the actual payments needed to be approved. Bottom line, the team didn't do well in 2016, but had done well the previous three seasons. I am more interested in where Dennis lands. I hope it's a good situation for him. www.fredericksburg.com/sports/college/virginia/virginia-volleyball-coach-hohenshelt-resigns/article_03c5ed42-961c-5568-8012-9da231c809d3.html

There had been a thread on Volleytalk titled something like "Is it Virginia?" that discussed why they couldn't keep coaches/get a competitive team. Perhaps you'll find some insight there?
Here's hoping Coach Hohenshelt has a soft landing.
