Actually I am uncertain whether Simone is that much better on defense than Allie. Both showed flashes last season. I suppose Simone seemed to be a bit better but that might be because she started at OH most of the time (hence more chances). I do prefer Simone over Allie for digging, but Allie passes better. Ultimately, both Simone and Allie are very good, and I would seek to maximize their skills. All of that is subject to how well our new players can play and fit in. Not sure who's better. I know it took Deja and Megan until their junior years to be dependable back row players. I can't say that either Simone or Allie were as dependable in their junior year--guess Simone gets the nod(a slight one). But no matter. What matters now is how they do in their senior year. I'm sure Coach Rose hasn't had to stress how much the coming season means. It essentially is left to us to hope for the best. I am positive that if one of us arrives at the divine solution, Coach Rose (who no doubt monitors our ramblings for our keen insight) will implement the solution in a trice.

I'm curious to see what Putnicki can bring to the court since I heard she was a six-rotation player. Will she be red-shirted or given some playing time?

I love Kat* Cather at RS, and Nia Reed, and Heidi Thelen and anybody that does the job.
* especially because she's a redhead.

Will she be red-shirted or given some playing time? from what i've gleaned from coaching staff, there may be a thought that an otherwise eligible player will be redshirted, but they're also there in reserve in case of injury or desperation. If I understood correctly what i was told, w/NCAA rules there's no point in the season where a decision must be made about whether or not to redshirt a player...until the season ends. So the answer to your question may be that we need to wait until August for Coach to make his assessment based on effort and performance in the gym.

Well, maybe until August 1st. But then we have four months to second guess the staff, and that's always fun.

Cather's track record reflects that of being a utility player so Putnicki may be our best hope for improving the RS position by subbing for Thelen, who usually tires after first two sets.

Cather's track record reflects that of being a utility player so Putnicki may be our best hope for improving the RS position by subbing for Thelen, who usually tires after first two sets. Serious questions: 1) what do you mean by "utility player"? Is it (a) a player who has a skillset that permits them to play well at multiple positions, or is it (b) a phrase that, for you, means a player who is OK at various positions, but doesn't really excel at any? and, as a follow-up to question 1, 2) why do you say "Cather's track record reflects that of being a utility player . . . ." From what little I know of the sport, the term "utility player" isn't really used that frequently in volleyball. To the extent it is used, I think it would lean more to option (a) in question 1 -- a player who can play well at OH, MB and RS/Opp. As to Cather being a "utility player," I may well have missed that, but what I understood is that she is a six-rotation player (which isn't how I would understand the term "utility player.") She appears to have played at a pretty high level at Old Miss (we'll find out fairly soon whether that translates to Penn State), where she made the SEC All-Freshman team in 2015, and played in 23 matches in 2016, started 19 ... led the team and ranked eighth in the SEC with a .351 hitting percentage ... posted a team-high 17 kills on a .480 clip in a 3-1 win at Georgia ... recorded 9 kills on a .348 clip in the first meeting against Auburn ... had a team-high 13 kills on a .346 clip against Kentucky ... Named SEC Player of the Week for Oct. 3 -- to my knowledge, all while playing RS/Opp. So, I'm really interested in hearing your thoughts (or those of anyone else) on these questions.

Would it make sense to play Putnicki as a DS or even Libero, if her backcourt skills are strong? Not knocking Kendall White at all! Just thinking how that may help ball control--IF Putnicki is a high-level passer--and get Putnicki playing time before stepping in after Frantti, Lee, and Thelen graduate and leave openings on the pins for the remaining experienced pin hitter, Nia Reed (who has another year of eligibility). Also, not knocking Nia Reed, who very well may have worked her way into the starting lineup for this season. Just a stab in dark. Playing the guessing game!

Each Division I wrestling program has a total of 9.9 scholarships, which can be divided among as many wrestlers as the coaches would like. As a consequence few wrestlers have full scholarships.

Cather would appear to be a solid RS/Opp based on her stats from Ole Miss. She hit for a high percentage in the SEC. Perhaps she can provide the type of lift to Penn State that Briana Holman brought to Nebraska from LSU.

Believe I read she didn't play all of 2016 season due to injury. So not utility, or resting another player, but instead being worked back into the lineup.

Is Cami May the incoming MB, who has been enrolled and training since Spring, the red shirt candidate?

You can have multiple red shirts in any given season. I believe both Novakovic and Reed redshirted 2 years ago; in Reed's case I think they were being cautious about her knee injury.
I think it's a puzzle that includes scholarship promises, position vacancies, and readiness.
