Yes, it is a nice gift even if you must pay some portion but so far they have played very little and have won according to the reported scores and in some cases quite one sided. Seems, however that it is a very expensive team building activity.

It's about education and represents a commitment from the coaching staff and the University to the players. If the expense troubles you, consider joining the Booster Club so as to have some input.

Join, yes. I think you will find that the members all want to help with the trips. They are all happy they can help. I think the experience is more life-broadening than team-building.

As an active supporter of the varsity programs at PSU and a member of long standing to this Booster it continues to amaze me the benefits that athletes obtain at this University and perhaps all Universities. Do we in any way honor the non athletic students or provide them with similar benefits such as The new facility designed to assist them in their studies or the opportunity to get early registration or to have the travel beyond just the team activity and leave with out major debt perhaps?
It is just unbalanced in my very humble opinion.

People generally want to give money to athletics as opposed to the "general fund." It may not be "fair," but since the money is given voluntarily, do you have a better way to encourage people to donate their money fairly?

I believe the answer is what those in charge of allocation of earned funds decide how to spend it.

I believe the answer is what those in charge of allocation of earned funds decide how to spend it. For the Penn State Women's Volleyball booster club, that's known in advance -- they give it to the team trip every four years. If a potential donor wants to give to a strictly academic purpose, there are a multitude of avenues for that.

It seems to me that Bob2061 Senor is dwarfing into Tillie Freshman. Just took my "donor" survey and suggested that volleyball should get more funds. Non-athletes are non-athletes because they unfortunately don't have the skill set to become scholarship athletes. However, they can obtain academic scholarships should they apply themselves. Life is not fair as much as some would like everyone to get a trophy. Women's volleyball deserves all the support we can give them which obviously includes this Brazil trip. Just wish I could have gone with them! Good for them.

Thank you for the welcome! Your "morph" is much, much better than my "dwarf". Tough getting older and the right words just don't come to you when you need them. (Smile.)

"Thank you for the welcome" is a pretty nice turn of phrase. As far as getting older, you're not alone on this site and as you're likely aware, getting older ain't for sissies.

Can't say whether this is true of all athletes, but I've been impressed with what the WVB give back...year after year...to the school and community. Yes, giving it for us to watch on the court is great...having an elite WVB team to watch 16 times a year is great, and you can see that the 5000 average/match + seem to appreciate the investment. Buuuut.... there's also THON and a lot of other volunteer or community based work the WVB team does. Read the CLASS award statement about our last winner (who i think was Scott). These are not takers. Watch the video BIG did in building up to the WI - PSU rivalry 2 years ago...watch the things Courtney and Pierce did with senior citizens. Heard a great story about Harmotto and doughnuts for a Sunday school class. They chose to involve themselves in something larger than themselves.
This team made me a believer in the merit of athletes -- at least PSU WVB athletes -- receiving support for their athletic pursuits while enrolled in college.

I believe the girls return today or tomorrow... I hope the coaches have gained a greater insight into the team. Is it true that they have won the National Championship after they return from overseas the last two times? If I am wrong blame it on the old USC coach that just turned 70!!! Congrats Dale!

Speaking of rosters being set... There have been six pages of Volleytalk posts (as of 5:45 PM EDT Wednesday) for other team's starting rosters. Not a peep from PSU fans or observers.
Are PSU fans becoming meeker or more circumspect? Or maybe we don't care about stinking Volleytalk?

They are back today (and perhaps yesterday). As to the overseas trip/National Championship intersection, working backwards, if there can only be one trip every four years, the previous trip would have been in 2013 -- which was a National Championship year, and the one before that would have been 2009 -- which was a National Championship year. If my understanding of the rule is off by a year, and there was a trip in 2014, then again -- National Championship year! But then the one before that would have been 2011 -- oops. I'm guessing my first guess is correct -- 2013 and 2009.
