We've posted a Q&A with Talking Head on the state of the team, and the matches with Yale, Wake Forest, and Ohio: Click Here for the Complete Post. Here's an excerpt: DigNittany: We’re talking today with Talking Head, who played D1 volleyball and has coached the sport for many years. So, it’s the opening home match of the season after three straight weeks on the road. Your thoughts? Talking Head: It’s going to be a great weekend on campus — above and beyond the volleyball team. There are so many teams doing well for Penn State right now, and it should be great weather. So it should be a lot of fun. Looking just at the volleyball team, I think attendance will be very good, and the energy level will be high. I think the team is really looking forward to that, I think they worked really hard on the road, and I think they deserve a great welcome home. DigNittany: The team is 7-0. The mood must be pretty good right now. Talking Head: I think compared to the past two seasons, they definitely are more comfortable and definitely appreciative of coming home, being able to play in front of their fans, and really show what kind of team they’ve become. There’s been a lot written about the new 6-2 system, but going back to an interview we had in the Spring, Coach Rose is putting players in positions where they feel comfortable and have the best chance to succeed. And the team also is developing a real confidence in each other. So maybe something doesn’t work out the first time, or the second time, but they have confidence it’s going to work out because they’ve seen it work out in practice and in matches.

It is too bad that Coach Rose had so little confidence in his backup WVB players that he felt compelled to play his regular starting team members the entire match against Yale, who has now lost 12 straight sets. It reflects an attitude of a coaching staff who care so little for the non-starters that they won't even share a few crumbs off the table with them regarding playing time. These player busts their butts in practice and the coaches don't give a damn about giving them the smallest measure of pleasure by letting them get to participate in front of their friends and family. All the coaches cared about was getting their job done so they could spend the evening enjoying themselves with non-college endeavors. I wish the coaches would have taken the entire night off because it was obvious that the team didn't need them to win this match.
I am so proud of Coach Franklin who has no qualms about playing backup football players even if it means Penn State doesn't get the most lopsided win possible. I can't imagine him saying it was necessary to win as quickly as possible so he couldn't give his inexperienced players a chance to get into a game. Shouldn't loyalty be a two-way street?

Well Coach Rose did get in some extra reps for Reed and Gorrell and sat Detering for a bit. He also played the Emily for quite a bit and even though she was a bit shaky he stayed with her another time. He also got the walkon DS in at the end too.
As I mentioned, that may be the best team last night, it was the team's (and seniors') home opener in front of a large energetic crowd. It was a good showing.
Perhaps today some of the other girls will get some court time.
Football is a sport with 100% injury rate so that factors in a ton more in substitution decisions.

My thought is that he wants to give his starters the necessary game time so that they can see how they need to work together in preparation for Big Ten season, beginning with Nebraska only a week away. Coach has never seemed mean-spirited in that regard. Some of the starters looked a little less than perfect, so I don't think it was a bad thing.

Gee Bob. I can think of a big difference between football and volleyball that accounts for players getting in, or not getting in, after the outcome is decided..... Wait for it. TIME! There's a clock in football that guarantees when the game will end. You can't make the game end sooner. That does make a difference.
On a personal level, and as a parent, I'd like to see more of the players, but Coach Rose doesn't operate that way. In the few short years I've watched, he hardly ever has. I remember the 2010 Final Four when Fatima Balza never saw the court. It's just his way.
At least this site gives you a forum to address your concerns.

I remember him even in Final Four putting in Megan Shiflett to serve...who would hit into the net. Camera swings to a close-up of Rose who lets his eyeballs drift up to look at his eyebrows ever so discretely.
Mentioned elsewhere...he discussed this concept on the Franklin show on Thursday....

LoL, I thought of that too--back in 2010 at the end of the National Championship game. Pronounced "Mee-gan."

She was an outstanding HS player in Virginia. Just never seemed to rise to the occasion at PSU, though given many chances. I decided she must have killed in practice, because Rose does not do this out of sentiment (her mother played for Rose, if I'm not mistaken).

Hard to say! That's why I'm glad to see he is slotting Sciorra in as Lee's sub and Lainey, of course, as the principle sub, so this'll all be old hat as the season progresses. Sciorra BTW raised just down the road from Shiflett...2 different eras, tho.

As we hoped coach got everyone who is not injured into the Wake match. No doubt he will do that this afternoon. Ohio is not going to be able to stick with us. They tried hard but could not really trouble Yale.

While I personally would have liked to see some of the backups play, I understand why coach played the starters, or at least I think I do. It was the home opener: #1) you want to win it, bigly, and #2) the fans want to see the stars in action (not backups).

Believe me - the friends and relatives would have loved to see the other team members play. Ironically, the better your backup players become, the better practice partners they become for the starters. Iron sharpens iron is an expression I have been told. Personally I enjoy a competitive match win so much more than a blowout - but that is just me.
