Soooooo...who are our top two middles?! Tough competition.
Good question.
I think Gorrell is #1 Gray is #2 Hord #3
Consistency is what I'll be looking for in future matches.

Just for the record, beating the Eastern Kentucky Colonels and the UMBC Retreivers doesn’t say anything about how PSU will do against B1G competition. There needs to be stronger competition before conclusions are drawn about how good we will be this year. You are 100% correct. However, I just finished my second pint of Irrational Ebullience, and am enjoying its afterglow. Good signs for Penn State: Taylor Leath is very good. Nia Reed appears to be smoother. Tori Gorrell has improved. Bryanna seems to be in control. Kendall White is playing very well. Jenna Hampton has, as one person described it "A Go button." Still, she makes freshman mistakes. Serena Gray is obviously very good. Kaitlyn Hord is very talented. Gabby Blossom is very good. Allyson Cathey will score points. She will also make freshman mistakes. As will all of these talented freshman who are, by definition, freshman. I think Penn State will have some real challenges in its Big 10 schedule. But it also will pull off some upsets.
Well said.
I'll add that I'm seeing less miscommunication (so far) than in the early going of the previous 2 years.

I agree if the years were 2015 and 2016. I think by and large, Penn State played very well in the early goung last season.

That said, we know the nature of our opposition. Coach Rose seems to schedule a lot of teams like this and despite the RPI hits PSU takes, it seems to work out. What does Coach Rose know?

Don’t expect then to win that one but if they give Stanford a good match this early with a young team that will be plus. That’s all I want to see. As far as their first two opponents u can only beat who’s on your schedule and wins are always nice no matter what plus I think a few wins to start could give those freshman some confidence

It's so annoying whenever they show a replay, the graphic is covering the live action so your stuck waiting for the next replay to see what you missed. Also, the radio guy does not know WVB terms. Receiving/passing is not hitting; hitting is not returning (if you're playing VB to simply return the ball over the net, your success rate will be very low; and there's a word for it, anyway: hitting/attacking). Stop talking in passive voice, e.g., catching up are they. Stop saying serves have gone over the net when they haven't. Learn what a net violation is. Get to know the hand signals (although the up ref was not using the net signal, the up ref was indicating which team and which player). But this guy's trademark, WHICH I LOVE, is telling where the ball hit the court. By naming the letter or the logo, must give listeners at home an idea of just how long serves went and where they were aiming. Well done.

Who's ready?
I was really happy to see these newbies step up:
Hampton Hord Gray Parker
Wow! 4 that look like they may be able to be the kind of Frosh we saw 4 years ago when Frantti and Washington stepped on the court.
Was Phlegley courtside? suited up?
And, of course, Leath is a great addition.
Thought it looked like Bryanna was given assignment of mother hen, trying to knit them all together, especially when Gorrell and Reed were resting. I'm expecting to see a different version of the team tonight that will give us a sense of how Coach plans to use these newbies.
Couple other thoughts: White, laying out for saves. Wow. Not holding back. Gorrell: her hands were splinted to the nth degree by the end of last season. Did not notice any of that today. I am sure that helps with some of her blocking that was so deft today.

I was just rewatching the Eastern Kentucky match and noticed that at the end PSU was running the 6-2 with Jonni taking Abby’s role as combination right side and setter. Parker’s versatility is going to be an asset.

Yes, a nice option to throw into the mix when you need it.

OK, moving on to the Navy match this evening. As Gordon Brunskill, former Sports Editor of the Centre Daily Times, pointed out to me this morning, how cool would it have been if Larry Bock had waited one more season to retire from Navy? We would have been treated to two coaches with a combined 2,596 wins (Larry Bock with 1,348 wins as a women's volleyball coach, and Russ Rose with 1248 wins through 11:30 a.m. today). That would almost certainly be a record that would stand for a very, very, very long time.

I thought Russ had the most wins in D1 women's VB?
