It's a good thing this is a no-name thread. I feel bad for the players (or their families) if they read this stuff.
I would hope the coaches tell the players to avoid sports forums.
They need to focus on their school and VB.
As for the parents, I'm sure it's not easy to stay neutral, but it's part of fandom, I guess.

As for a pep talk. There have been other demoralizing losses. Remember Illinois coming back and destroying the Lions at Rec Hall. Then there were the back-to=back losses on a road trip to Purdue and Indiana. So, the season isn't over because of a couple of weak performances. I think that Illinois loss was in 2011? When the Illini was #1 and ended up playing for the national title.
And the 2010 lost weekend in Indiana had Brown, Wilson and D'Errico...so, I have a much worse feeling this go-round.
I was referencing the 2014 season when the team (fantastic freshmen) blew a 19-8 lead in the first set and lost to the Illini at home.

I think that Bryanna is doing the best she can with what there is to work with. I too would like to see what Tori and Amanda could offer.

Yeah, even before today, I was worried that next year will be a tougher year than this one.
You have to realize that we are in one of the toughest conferences in VB (actually all sports). If a player is not in the top 30 of Prepvolleyball's senior aces they usually are not the kind of talent that PSU needs to excel in volleyball. We need more talent to win these road matches. I agree PSU needs top 30 senior ace recruits on a regular basis, year in and year out. If you expect to be in the final four on a regular basis and challenge for an NC, players outside the top 30 are not statistically the answer. They are not going to make the starting lineup. There are always exceptions.

I expect Penn State will stay in the top 10; #9 or #10.
Here are two things I find amusing.
For a decade I read on another message board Russ Rose is the greatest coach in the history of the game, the greatest coach there will ever be. Two losses and what I see here is mostly second guessing the coach or giving advice what he should do differently.
In the matches against Eastern Kentucky, University of Maryland Baltimore County, and Navy I read here how the freshmen and all the players are so fantastic. Now I read how they are not the answer and how Penn State has to recruit better players.

LOL! That's part of fandom.
I seem to recall reading in the longest thread on VT (715 pages and counting) a few years back how Cardinal fans were asking for Dunning's head. I wrote that I still thought he was one of the best coaches. Sure enough he went out and won a natty.
Give us 24 hours to vent our frustrations at this loss. Don't judge our match day comments too harshly.

We watched the match (or, rather, the live stats version of the match). Very disappointing to be sure. A few thoughts (we're slackers, but pontificating on message boards is frighteningly easy, as some may have noticed):
1) the absence of Nia Reed is huge. She was the terminator, and though Allyson Cathey has had some definitely high points, Nia is IMHO at this point in time, as a RS Sr., more terminal.
2) This was to be expected -- not necessarily last night (though I thought it was a bit of a trap match) but sometime (or several sometimes). This is a very young team. Young players (generally speaking) make more mistakes. Last night they made a lot of mistakes
3) To answer pennstate1973's question of whether this site is failing, I think that question (which I would restate as "Is this site meeting your expectations/needs or is it failing to meet them?")can only be answered on an individual basis.
From a purely statistical basis, pageviews are way up over last year (and each year has shown double digit growth). I can't check actual numbers until I return from China and sign in as Nyline, but my recollection is that last year combined for the website and the forum was well over 700,000 pageviews and over 30,000 users (I believe Nyline and slackerstaff would count as one, because we use the same device). Last time I checked this season, usage was up by over 30% over last year.
From a personal point of view, I really appreciate the info and analysis people post. I think it's great, and for that reason, I think the site is succeeding -- totally apart from numbers/stats.
If, on the other hand, you find it lacking for any reason, and it doesn't meet your needs/expectations (and that bothers you significantly), and you see no hope for improvement, then, though anyone and everyone is welcome, this site may not be right for you.
4. There is disagreement on this site. Millennium thinks Tori Gorrell should be used more as a serving sub. Much as I admire Tori Gorrell as a player, I don't think she should. For those interested in watching, Millennium and I will be meeting sometime tomorrow behind the DigNittany World Headquarters to settle this. 😀
5. I am on a train from Wuhan to Guilin. Too much time on my hands, maybe?

It will be interesting to see if we get membership requests from the PRC.

Of all the things I wrote that's what you come away with? I gotta do better.
I'll be ready for you. I'm practicing my Kung-Fu-Lion technique:
PS - How's the restroom situation there? I've heard rumors.

Restrooms are fine, by and large. Beat men's in Beaver Stadium, for example, easily. Actually, as good or better than most public restrooms in US.

The question might be "Will PSU ever have a terminal hitter again before Russ retires?".
Bite your tongue and take it back right now!!
Ouch!!! Great teams have balance and really need multiple terminal hitters. We do need to be even better recruiting; it is that important.
