Thanks Ethan, and get some sleep. You're getting almost as bad as me! LOL! (that is, burning the midnight oil.)

What a great, gritty team effort. Here are a few of our "winners" for the match: In the "Thankyou Geoff Carlson" category -- Jonni Parker (I still have to wonder, what was Geoff Carlson thinking -- how do you not plan ahead for a Jonni Parker?). In the "kudus are due you" category: Bryanna Weiskircher. We are so lucky Bryanna decided to stay for her RS Senior season. No disrespect at all to Gabby Blossom (who will be a really good setter for Penn State), but Bryanna has made a huge difference this season, with her calm leadership, great defense, outstanding serving, and solid setting. In the "Other Freshman not Named Jonni or Serena" category: Jenna Hampton and Amanda Phegley -- fittingly, club and high school teammates, making a big contribution for Penn State last night. In the "Wow Nia, Just Wow" category: Nia Reed. She has worked so very hard for four years, overcoming injury (including this season) and is having a terrific senior season, providing the terminal arm that Penn State needs. In the "Welcome Back Taylor" category: Taylor Leath. Truly a six-rotation player who helps the team in so many ways. In the "Kendall, you Rock" category: Kendall White. Another AA season in progress. Finally, in the "This was a team effort" category: everyone else on the team. Great job!!!

Keith Sunderland could not say enough good stuff about Hampton. Brought back memories of Lacey and Kendall P launching themselves horizontal in the championship v BYU.
At the start of the season, I had no expectations whatsoever about Hampton. Did not understand how good she is.

At the start of the season, I had no expectations whatsoever about Hampton. Did not understand how good she is. Love her mind-set, very business-like, no "over celebrating" of every point. Just grinds and plays hard. Celebrates the outstanding plays, but pretty much uses her energy to make plays.

Oh, sorry, and my (perhaps) favorite Sunderland quote: "Hampton goes in for a 1-point landing..."

She's an incredible player!

I am very happy to also see Amanda Phegley contribute to our matches. Everyone seems to be getting more productive.

It seems far-fetched, but maybe there's method to Coach Rose's madness?

It seems far-fetched, but maybe there's method to Coach Rose's madness? Let's not get carried away. Sure, he has 39 years of proven success, plus just over half of this 40th season. Sure, he has more D1 NCAA WVB titles than any coach in history. Sure, he has a higher winning percentage than any other D1 WVB coach in history. Sure, he has more D1 WVB wins than any other coach in history. But what do we really know about his coaching ability? Are we sure it wasn't just luck?

Technical question for the wiser persons who frequent this site. Serena Gray and to an extent Tori Gorrell had trouble getting past Purdue's block last night. Serena hit .125 and Tori hit .000. In prior matches, against all levels of competition, the quick middle attack has succeeded at a relatively high rate. Were last night's challenges due to great scouting by Purdue? Excellent play by Purdue's middles? Or something else?
I ask because if Purdue can do this, so can other opponents. Watching the match, I did not perceive anything unusual on Penn State's side of the net.

Well if his last 39 + years of coaching was based on luck I would like a little.

Watching the match, I did not perceive anything unusual on Penn State's side of the net. Not a wiser person, although I have been characterized as a wise-guy (not in the Goodfellows sense), but I'll take a crack. Purdue was serving us very tough, so that makes it more difficult to run a middle attack -- that's my first guess. Second -- Serena Gray has run hot-and-cold throughout the season, so I'm not surprised to see her go cold for a match, regardless of whatever else is going on. But she could get hot the next match -- again, somewhat apart from whatever the other team is doing. Third: Purdue's middles were pretty effective in the first set in particular, but also throughout the match (without looking at their stats to confirm this "off-the-cuff" ill-informed analysis). Fourth: both teams played really good defense from the backrow -- that lowers your hitting percentage. Fifth: Tori Gorrell didn't have a very good match offensively and was, I believe, replaced by Amanda Phegley, who had a very good match offensively. So at least one middle had a very good game offensively. Sixth: We were missing Kaitlyn Hord, who leads the team in hitting percentage. That had to have an effect.

The defense by both teams was really fun to watch. Lot of long rallies and some of the digs were unbelievable. Was good to see Jonni Parker have such a good match. I was not impressed early on as she was not able to terminate very well. She seems to have adjusted pretty well. PSU seemed to get better through out the match. They showed a lot of fight. Jenna Hampton had some really GOOD digs. Very impressive.
Freshmen players are going to have good and bad days. I remember Coach Rose talking about that after the 2010 championship match. He said that the finals was the first time that Scott, Slay and Deja had all been on in the same match.
