Nice win by PSU. Got the error bug under control as the match went along, to finish with no more errors than Nebraska. Penn State kept fighting through the OOS situations and found a way to score. Good defensive play by White. And this is a freshman-laden team. Lots and lots of room to grow each month, and over the next three years. And, the victory without key freshman Middle Blocker, Kaitlyn Hord. Future is bright, Penn State! Very bright! The great news is that there is much more room for improvement. Excited to get positive contributions from Gorrell, especially in Set 5 when everything was messy and it was about will to win. Also thought it was neat that Blossom and Sciorra got in at key moments. I do think this match featured the experienced players more than any other so far. Partly that was due to Kaitlyn's injury, but also because the situation demanded calm in the storm.

Nia Reed said in this interview that Kendall White drinks a Red Bull before every match. No wonder she's so hyped.
Nice Interview with Nia, Thanks for posting.

I really enjoyed how Coach Rose employed challenges, particularly in Set 5, to catch Nebraska's repeated "netting." I think it sensitized the Refs so that they made a few net calls on their own. It's my impression that Coach Rose doesn't particularly like to make challenges, but Cook's overuse of the challenge may have vexed him and he really "went after it." Beating Cook at the challenge game felt good.
When I listen to Cook give an interview in a neutral setting, he comes across as a pretty decent guy. When I watch him in a game, particularly against PSU, I see someone with a win-at-all-costs (I think he'd cheat) attitude who makes my skin crawl. Who's the real John Cook?
Who cares.

... Beating Cook at the challenge game felt good. Beating Cook felt good, period. Our ladies will need the Rutgers, Rutgers, Indiana scheduling to improve on Saturday’s rough spots before facing some of the B1G challenges that await. We are...

Volleyball has a bit of an edge when it comes to coaching. Just a tad right? Lol Psu has the best volleyball coach in country in my opinion and best wrestling coach. Why can’t they figure out what they need in football ? The Fire Franklin! train seems to be gaining some steam.

Because he makes challenges which is perfectly legal? Cook is a first rate coach who runs an outstanding program at Nebraska with an incredible fan base.
This is the type of comment that turned me off to VT and many PSU fans who posted on VT;.

This is the type of comment that turned me off to VT and many PSU fans who posted on VT;. His challenges are perfectly legal. Nebraska has an incredible fan base. His program is successful. He's one of only a handful of coaches who have won a championship in the last 10 or so years so I guess that qualifies him as a first rate coach. I regret that the tone of my comment is representative of what you've found to be distasteful among PSU fan posts on Volleytalk. I'm glad you felt comfortable sharing how my comment made you feel.

What is that all about? Keys? In 2011, Lauren Cook (John Cook's daughter and the starting setter for the Huskers) was charged with a felony hit & run after hitting a motorcyclist while driving on a suspended license. At her hearing, a lawyer and Tom Osborne (the AD and former football coach at Nebraska) reportedly did all the talking (aside from an apology she read), and Lauren was entered into a pre-trial diversion program (reportedly unprecedented for such a felony, although hers was reportedly the only felony hit and run to ever apply for the program) and her record subsequently was expunged. She was penalized with a one-week suspension by John Cook. Many, including me, thought she got off easy because of her status as a Nebraska athlete and because she was the daughter of John Cook. To read more about the case, see this Deadspin article by Brian Hickey from 12/6/2011: deadspin.com/5865749/nebraskas-star-volleyball-player-gets-off-easy-for-hitting-a-motorcyclist-while-driving-suspendedI don't want this thread to deteriorate into a rehashing of the incident, so if you want to discuss it further, please post on the Off Topic thread I've created: Lauren Cook Hit and Run thread (if you feel you must post).

I think it's very impressive that Tori Gorrell played so well in this match. In spite of not starting for most of the year she really showed up in this match. She seems to have improved offensively since last year. I think she's following the example of Nia Reed, who waited 4 years to get her chance to start. I think it also speaks well of the chemistry of the time in that all are trying to help each other.
Am I right in that during the 5th set Leath was substituted out more in the back row? That being said it seems to me the Leath has been hitting better and harder than she was during earlier parts of the season. She seemed to be tentative earlier in the season.
On a different note, I thought the Cook's challenged were a bit obnoxious. Yeah, they're legal, but using up all your challenges just because you can is a bit much. Maybe he's thinking that maybe he'll luck out. It seemed to me that a couple of them were pretty unlikely to be overturned.
Why do you think that PSU was so good in the 5th set? I wouldn't have expected such good nerves from such a young team? Was it mostly Nia Reed? I know from the quotes that Kendall said that Nia came out saying they weren't going to lose the 5th set. It definitely bodes well for the future!
Who'da thunk that we'd win set 4 hitting .023?
