I guess it would be too much to ask for an OH who could hit over .300. There is something sad when you say our players looked good but we still lost. Something is wrong and the coaches can't fix it. There are two weeks remaining in the regular season. Where might we find one? In an obscure corncrib outside Papillion, Nebraska? PSU will finish the season with the players they have presently. Next year, new players will arrive, players will take over new responsibilities, and we'll see what happens. Back in 2010, Coach Rose recognized the growing parity in Division I volleyball. Do you think there's less parity today? I believe the coaching staff tries to get the best players available. Do you think any other of the 300+ D I teams don't try? Do you believe high school girls have free will--the ability and right to chose where they go? Why do we go through this after every defeat? We know how you feel. It seems as if you can't understand why the best players aren't playing for PSU. We've tried to tell you that a big driver might be the players themselves--they don't want to come to Happy Valley. Why don't we have Plummer? Let's not do this again, please. I never implied that the coaches could get a quick fix to our problem. In fact I don't know if they can bring in elite recruits anymore. Just because Nebraska bring in a stream of recruits from their home state; it doesn't mean we have to match their efforts. Bringing in lesser ranked players doesn't guarantee problems winning but it might. High school girls have always had free will and could choose where they go; so I don't see how this comment is relevant. I know the best players don't want to come to Happy Valley for volleyball anymore; but why is a problem some refuse to even think about. Strangely in wrestling the boys are beating down the door to get here. Most sports players don't go to a college because of its name but rather for the opportunity to play for a coach. Stanford doesn't seem to have any special attraction for wrestling recruits. Coach Rose stated that everything has an expiration date. Since we don't always drink the blue koolaid doesn't mean we are unfaithful, just more aware of reality. I don't like to see Pittsburgh rapidly closing the gap with our ladies volleyball team either and I am not going pretend that it isn't happening.

"just more aware of reality"
OH, what reality tells you that any coach in the USA has more reputation than Russ?
Competition for player is intense more so now than ever because the coaching reputations now are much greater than they were just a few years ago but if you think our staff is not working hard to get the best then you fail to recognize their intense approach
BUT, Stanford has an Academic attraction and often California girls where there is much talent do not like the PSU weather. Is it an accident that Wisconsin and Minnesota have a roster full f local talent?
If you saw where the club girls from PA go to college you will note that only a very few go to Universities that are competitive with the Big Ten. The MId west plus Texas and Florida have far superior coaching clubs than that which has sprung up in Pa. Those are hot beds of volleyball activity at the high school level. Their coaches at the club level have a strong impact on the players decisions.
And last, sir, how do you know that the best players did not consider coming here but chose not to??

I've moved bob2061's last post to the new thread "The Thread for Gripes and Concerns About PSU Recruiting." The hope is that all such posts will be in that thread. If I (or my Slacker Staff) find posts we believe are more appropriate for "The Thread for Gripes and Concerns About PSU Recruiting," we will move them there. This will be a subjective decision on a case-by-case basis.

There were concerns whether Simome Lee could hit .300 on the outside. She did in conference and overall last season. Coach Rose and staff can get players there. We have to trust the process.

Two incredibly evenly matched teams competed on Saturday night. Penn State had its chances, but the home team (the #4 team in the nation who RR continues to say has the best setter in the country), squeaked it out. There's something to be said for grinding a win when perhaps you shouldn't, but there's something to be said for a strong home team topping a strong team in five, with the fifth set at 15-13. It was truly anyone's match in the fifth. Unfortunately for PSU, we weren't in our best offensive rotation at the end of the set. That's how volleyball works.
The first match was an incredible display of why the serve/receive game matters. If we can keep up that effort and replicate it, this team will be unstoppable.
I have nothing but respect for Taylor Leath. Her contributions are tremendous. We are in system so often because of outstanding passing from Leath. There's also a level of exhaustion that comes from receiving more balls than anyone else on the team in a five set match. At the end of the set, she went up and swung hard. Sometimes you get blocked. I'd prefer that any time to a tip that ensures an opponent kill. Russ wants his players to play hard. Keep on keeping on, Taylor!
We'll learn a lot about the team in the next four games, but as always, thrilled to watch a team that never rolls over and is always in the hunt. I can count on one hand the number of programs that can say that year in and year out.
