Good luck, Emmy, I know it's tough sitting on the bench so to speak, now hopefully you get the playing time you want. I'll be rooting for you as long as you don't face PSU.

Kaitlyn Hord is still listed in the Penn State directory. I assume she’s taking classes and will graduate this spring, which would explain why we haven’t heard anything about a potential transfer destination yet. Perhaps KSC can convince her to stay. We shall see.

Mississippi State just picked up a starting setter. Penn State lost one.

I wouldn't personally worry too much about these departing players given the full context of COVID, RR retiring, transfer portal, etc. KSC is going to need a couple seasons to fully reset the program. It's going to be interesting to watch how she manages the transfer portal with her own players over the next couple seasons.
In the near term, there's an extreme, but temporary, effect of COVID: 1) some players got that extra year of eligibility and 2) recruits and players experienced a very different & challenging couple seasons. Penn State is going to struggle this offseason in the portal as a result. Hopefully COVID will pass and we'll return to something more normal.
But the transfer portal is here to stay and it's going to impact volleyball players uniquely. Understand that these players are coming to college after a lifetime of club volleyball, which has definitely shaped their mentality. High school volleyball, with its 4 years of commitment and relationship building, is much less important than it has been historically. The 4-year commitment is really an anomaly vs. both youth clubs and professional teams, which operate on an annual plan. Players today are fighting to make a better club or team within a club EVERY year. A 4-year commitment to a college program is going to feel very different for these young women. And, before you blame today's kids, realize that it goes both ways because the clubs are fighting to retain their top talent or replace it with better talent every year as well.
The role of the college coach is really going to be a tough balance. Build the wrong culture and your players can go elsewhere. Build an all-star team of transfers and you risk alienating your young talent or discouraging recruits. There's also more parity and options than ever before in college volleyball. It's all going to change a lot, I hope KSC and Penn State can manage it really well.

We've got Muisenga and Starck listed as S or OH/S. Thoughts? Anyone see them setting in warmups?

We've got Musinga and Starck listed as S or OH/S. Thoughts? Anyone see them setting in warmups? Those listings are based on published reports, not watching practices or warmups. I think Muisenga was recruited as a setter. I think Starck could set, but was recruited as a 6-rotation OH.

You know I'm the guy who coined the name, "Cheesehead Jesus, don't you? I did not know that fact. It’s more of a VT urban legend thing at this point. Sacrilege aside, it may be one of the all time great volleyball forum nicknames leading to visceral reactions. You need to get back to work. The current VT hype machine is raging out of control for some players in rather average conferences. At least CJ was objectively very, very good. "Cheesehead Jesus" was less of a knock on Carlini than it was on VT's Wisconsin fans. They spoke of her as the Messiah. I just couldn't abide by that. FWIW, I really dislike Carlini.

I find it impossible to dislike any volleyball player. I particularly can't root against our National team players. Carlini contributed substantially to the development of the Gold medal group even though she was not selected. As you say, she did not ask to be anointed as savior. On the other hand, there are one or two coaches who I don't enjoy.

I don’t necessarily agree with her take, but found the numbers of interest.

I don’t necessarily agree with her take, but found the numbers of interest. One significant difference between the corporate turnover rate and the number of players in the portal is that the corporate rate reflects employees who actually leave their company (every six-months) whereas "in the portal" reflects all players who are considering transferring to another school. Also, choosing the 12 headcount (scholarship total) is misleading -- the total players in the portal includes both scholarship and non-scholarship players. So, although I don't know the numbers in each group, the total of scholarship players in the portal is undoubtedly lower than 630.

Meh... 1. Apples vs. oranges comparison. In a "major corporation", employees have options to take different roles within their local business/branch. They also have options to move geographically within the same company. Volleyball is flat: you either do your role (volleyball player) at school A or school B. 2. Do fans really deserve better? Fans pay money to see competitive sports. How does the transfer portal take away from that transaction? 3. The relationship between coaches, athletes, and recruits is going to be the key for programs to remain successful.
