Dont, let up on the gas... Let's get this over in 3. Frantti is showing her old form from last year. Yea, tonight she isn't just trying to kill the ball thru the block. She is placing/high hands on more of her shots based on blockers! Yes, Frantti played extremely well. If she plays like that the rest of the season, lookout. It seems the whole team was playing with a renewed confidence with Courtney back, which was a very pleasant surprise. I didn't expect to see her until at least the MN game. Although every time she jumped coming out of the pipe I had to cringe, praying she wouldn't injure her ankle again. Lots of errors from OSU but I think that was mostly due to PSU's serving and blocking. Also, PSU played fairly consistently in all 3 sets, which they haven't done in a while.

5 pm start really diminished the home court advantage. only about ~40 students at the far end of the gym; lots of volleyball clubs but a pretty sparse turnout imho. And their band (which, credit is due, sounded great) is less than half the size of PSU's fab one. To have a team ranked just out of the top10 and support it so meagerly...PSU so lucky, so supported. for our friend 8M, hope you liked the hitting differential: .052 OSU, .349 PSU. Was that the largest of the year? 297 pts.! i think we all saw things that could stand improving, nonetheless. if their hitters get hot on Friday, watch out. I saw much less celebrating before it was over...very determined, i thought. and Courtney looked more and more comfortable as the match went on. SO good to have her back! PS Nia Reed has no leg brace. Sweet. Absolutely, I have been waiting for a while to see the hitting get back on track. They have the talent to play like this in every match. Just have been waiting for the team to begin clicking. Serving and blocking were excellent this game. Last year and the year before it seems they went through the same phase; it takes PSU about half the regular season to put it all together, but once they're zoned in lookout.

Fabulous addition to her repertoire.

I don't think Ohio State played particularly well. But it was wonderful to see PSU play three solid sets with no major letups or lengthy bouts of chaos. Great to see Frantti placing swings well. Not a great night for Washington but this is why depth matters so much. Courtney will need some time to regain her form but it is fabulous to have her back. What an advantage to have such a deep core of defensive specialists to rotate in, the Pierces, Caraway, Krauss and Rivera occasionally. What a shot Caraway took to the face and she barely reacted! If they keep playing at this level of intensity and quality, keep rolling through the remaining B10 sked, beat MN and NE, they should be ready to take on USC et al in the tournament. Might be an advantage to go in ranked below 1 in the AVCA poll like they were last year, gives them something to prove.

Fun watching the Lady Lions performing on the court tonight. I think they are starting to put it all together.

A few observations, some of which will echo what others have said.
1) PSU's serving pretty much decided it. Lee, Weiskircher, Frantti and Lainy Pierce served so well, the Buckeyes sided out at only 36-37-51 percent. Well that is the match right there. Washington wasn't serving well - if she's on as well, PSU has a really excellent serving rotation, one of the best they've had in the dynasty era. Lee was just serving bombs at the start of the match and that set the tone.
1a) PSU's defense was rugged -- When was the last time Taylor Sandbothe hit -.125? Even Elizabeth Campbell, who is a wonderful player, only hit .140. But it was all set up by serving. OSU could hardly get in system all night and they were not very good in transition.
2) Probably the best overall match I've seen from Frantti. I've been talking about the need for her to get to the next level as a hitter -- well this was a big step. Very smart and precise hitting from her. Taking what the defense gave her, using lots of different locations and speeds. I'm sure setting deserves some credit. Also some really good defensive play. tOSU targeting her on serve and she handled it really well.
3) Not an off night from Washington, but a quiet night -- they were cruising and didn't need to lean on her (or Courtney very much). Frantti and Whitney were so efficient.
4) I'm sure having Courtney back gave the team a big emotional/leadership lift. Hardly saw a smile from Courtney all night -- all business. I don't think they let up the gas all night -- they had no intention of letting Ohio State back in and have a five set match. That was not happening.
5) It's always cool when Karch broadcasts a game. At one point he commented on Washington's serving -- even though this was not a big serving night for her, Karch is aware of how well she serves. Talking about how important it is for middles to develop a serve to play internationally. Very clear he is seeing her as national team material -- which of course she is. Also appreciated his comments on Weiskircher's setting. She deserves more attention -- she's been really steady, and I think steadily improving.

Loved the defense last night...Ali, Keeton and company kept receiving and passing tight and on point. Best overall performance of the season. The team looks so much more mature and confident in their play. And with 9 more games before the playoffs, still plenty of time to even get better! Go Lions!
Oh, and commentating was an A- from Karch (he got the minus because he had to cover SO many mistakes and ridiculous banter by Sunderland), and D- for Paul. Not only was he getting tongue tied and making verbal miscues, he seemed to be pointing out, for the most part, how poorly OSU was playing, not commenting on the amazing team cohesiveness and preparation that PSU exhibited. At least Karch did. He was in large part an advocate of PSU volleyball, with positive subtle and not so subtle comments about our program, coaches, players and work ethic.

At least Karch did. He was in large part an advocate of PSU volleyball, with positive subtle and not so subtle comments about our program, coaches, players and work ethic. I didn't mind Sunderland as much as some of the others. He wasn't terribly well prepared but at least he knows the game of volleyball and he was VERY enthusiastic. At one point Sunderland asked Karch whether Ohio State was passing so badly or it was just great serving by PSU. Karch replied that he thought PSU deserved most of the credit for serving very tough. That was what it looked like to me. Consistently tough serving all night. PSU didn't have a single average server out there; tOSU didn't get a single breather all night. Meanwhile PSU's passing game really is improving. I was noticing how well they handle the short dying-duck serves that flutter to the 10-foot line. That is a serve Wisconsin has used to great effectiveness. Anyway PSU has clearly worked hard on those and passes them perfectly now. I think they turned every short serve last night into a kill. The only thing that is still giving PSU trouble are flat serves deep -- and there is no easy answer for that -- those are just hard. But they're also high error serves so you can't use those to go on runs. I was thrilled by Lee's serving. She's hitting flat, lots of velocity, looks like no spin but the ball just dives down so maybe it's a very slight topspin. Not sure how she's doing it but she's hitting a really hard serve and locating it to different depths on the court. Super, super effective serve.

Our match write-up is now live (though much/most of the analysis has already been covered on this Forum -- though not the shout-out link to "They Might Be Giants"). Here's the link: Lions Sweep Buckeyes: Goodbye Columbus (Hello Rec Hall)
And here's an expert (analysis by Penn State fan Future)

the Dignittany site write-up warns about Wednesday being no predictor of Friday. I think that's totally true.
But here's some rumination on last night: If we want to lay our success yesterday to our serving (i'll buy that) i also think we have to view a portion of OSU's failure to their setter situation. Apparently things have not been gelling with Ruetter, but In a move i do not understand (desperation?), Carlston subbed in the injured setter in set 3. Except she wasn't cleared to serve some of her serves and looked like defense was an issue. So they had to sub the backup setter back in and out. That has got to take a toll on your hitters. Although they hit better in set 3 than 1 and 2, they still had 9 hitting errors. i would not recommend putting a still-limited player in like that...and she already is wearing one heck of a leg brace.
Carlston's problems started before the injury: bad loss in set 1 v. Michigan State with all the #6 team in place. The next night, they won in 4, each set decided by 2 points. now last night.
Carlston's a really good coach. i have a feeling he's going to sort this out. please wait till next week...
PS: Rose and Carlston exchanged comments during the passage on the floor between sets 1 and 2. Don't often see that. Penny for their thoughts!!

Carlston putting her in for the 3rd set might have been a combination of A) They're not going to win the match wtih Ruetter B) Probably not going to win the match anyway, so no pressure; and C) Nice opportunity to get Hughes some experience even if she's a long way from 100%. If Hughes plays Friday it could be a very different dynamic. OSU was really struggling in serve receive and maybe Hughes is athletic enough to turn some 2 passes into kill opportunities, I don't know. Her injury looks pretty serious though. She was really hurting last night you could see and she's not going to be that much better in 2 days. The other thing which shouldn't be overlooked is that Hughes, when she is healthy, has one of the best serves in the B1G -- very nasty jump spin. In short losing her is just too much for them to overcome against elite teams. PSU has enough depth to cope with losing Courtney but most teams do not.

Good stuff from Future.
I really liked 2 DS or Libero/DS rotations last night, which they were doing I assume to give Courtney some rest.
Ohio State just couldn't do anything. Kendall Pierce has just been impressive all year every time she's been in there.
And how about Courtney. Severe ankle sprain 3 weeks ago and still able to leap like that. What an amazing athlete.

One thing to notice from the game was that Krause was not in the game. Unless she was sick or injured, she was playing more than any other DSs in the recent games. I would rather want Kendall and Lainy combo more than Krause at the DS position, so I am not complaining at all.

from the Daily Collegian:
The victory marked Penn State’s 39th consecutive year that the team has recorded at least 20 wins in a season.
