Can't wait for the VNL to start. This will be the first time I've been able to watch it. Volleyball in England is so far behind most of the rest of the world. We didn't even come close to qualifying for the current qualifying tournament for the EuroVolley Champs in August. So sad that sports fans here are missing out on this wonderful game. Looking forward to seeing the three former Penn State players in action. That may be true, but England has THE world's best VB announcer/commentator, in my opinion: CLAYTON LUCAS. I love when he does matches and his interviews of players/coaches. He's extremely professional and knowledgeable. Is he the guy who had the crush on Cynthia Barboza? Not sure what station he works for, but here's his Twitter: Clayton Lucas Twitter

I've only been following for about 5 years. I think he's a freelancer and does matches for FIVB. English TV channels pick up the feed and commentary from FIVB (instead of adding their own).

He announced FIVB matches. I loved his use of words because they were different from US announcers. Instead of saying the player "hit" the ball he would say the player "cracked" the ball.

Just started to watch the first match, Turkey v Serbia, don't suppose there are many of you watching at 6am ET!! It's 11am here and being happily retired I can relax and enjoy. The picture quality looks excellent, lots of camera angles and the court looks great. Commentators sound knowledgeable. Can't wait for the USA matches! I feel like the US is my adopted country since England are so dire at volleyball. Serbia are 5-3 up, looks like 2 evenly matched teams although don't know what their world rankings are.

Spoke too soon about the picture quality....some breaks in transmission and problems with sound. As I write, it's now gone off completely!! If anyone's watching, are you getting the same problems?

Excellent first match, Turkey just edging it 16-14 in set 5. Serbian team, much younger, pushed them all the way. Russia just beat Germany 3-0. Two hours to USA first match. Waiting for my wife to start complaining about all this volleyball I'll be watching. Amazing value though for £15.99 for the whole tournament.

Thanks for the updates. I hope you will have some observations about the first USA match. I'm tempted to subscribe and probably will if I hear the video quality remains good.

This is my uneducated guess. This is a mixture of A team and B team players. I think Karch wants to evaluate players more than focus solely on winning.

You're probably right, I was surprised to see Plummer thrown straight in. She's done well on the front line but has been a little slow to react on the back. Apart from her, this is the first time I've seen most of these players. Thompson has been outstanding. 1st set has gone to the US, 25-20.

Others have mentioned this announcer, I think, and I think he's really good. Maybe this is a well-known phrase, but it wasn't to me: describing the challenge faced by the Dominican Republic when it was down 21-19 (I think) but had just taken a point, he said something like "That's good, but now every point has to be a prisoner." Also, loved the audio of the DR coach speaking with his team. I don't speak Spanish, but you only had to know one word: His talk went something like this: "SpanishWord, SpanishWord, SpanishWord, Larson, SpanishWord SpanishWord, SpanishWord." She was the one Nebraska player that stood out to me above all others during that infamous semi-final match in Omaha, that Penn State won in five sets.
