USA v Canada under way with an English commentator - sounds like the same one who did the USA v DomRep yesterday. Two changes to the line-up; Drews in for Thompson at opposite setter and Parsons in for Larson at OH. Canada look better than DomRep, they're 14-12 up at the moment Poor Canada, they were up 21-16 in the first set and just like that, USA tie it up at 23 behind Tori Dixon's serving and USA win it 26-24. The next 2 sets were a slaughter. Obviously, Canada were not playing to win. They had Gray (an OH) at libero for the entire match. Forgive my ignorance, but why would they want to lose?

Will Karch take one libero on the final roster and put the other libero on the alternate list or will he take two liberos on the final roster. I wouldn't read anything into Megan not playing yet. These are only first round matches.

Tonorrow's match vs Brazil should be exciting. Looking forward to that one. Might we see one or more former Penn Staters on the court? Seems Karch is starting Lauren Carlini and Justine Wong-Orantes in the 1st round of games. I suspect we'll see Micha Hancock and Megan Courtney in the 2nd or 3rd round of games. Also, we haven't see the best middles playing yet. I think Haleigh Washington soon too.

Their coach is using the VNL as training for future tournaments. They suited up Alexa Gray (one of their best OH) as a libero for their first 2 matches. That's not a recipe for success, but they want to improve her serve-receive, so I get it. Also, they switched so many players by the 2nd set, it was evident they wanted to give the backups precious tournament reps.

These are only first round matches. My guess is that if Karch takes Justine Wong-Orantes, then he won't take Courtney, because both Kelsey Robinson and Jordan Larson (both OH's are shoo-ins for Tokyo) can play libero, should Justine get injured. That leaves room on the roster to take another OH (we have lots of really good ones) or a third setter, which might be the wiser choice (Poulter has been injury prone).

Against Brazil Karch made changes to the lineup. This is probably a stronger lineup than the first two matches. USA won first two sets. Brazil wins set 3.

Micha was one of the 14 available to play in the first match, but not in the last 2 matches. I don't think Karch has put in his strongest lineup yet, in any match. TeamUSA is very deep at almost every position, except libero. Fortunately, Justine Wong-Orantes has been playing very well. I'm curious to see if her serve-receive holds up throughout the tournament.

Italy also has an OH who is about 5'11", Caterina Bosetti, who is of the same caliber as Gabi. Both are excellent and world-class players, even though they are undersized.

I don't know if anyone noticed that Clayton Lucas and Salima Rockwell called the USA-Brazil match today. What an excellent commentating duo. I really enjoyed listening to them on the mic today.

I see Micha listed in the box scores. Akinradewo/Washington are so athletic.
