Congrats to the ladies for winning a third VNL in a row. If I understood a recent interview correctly, USA and Brazil take this tournament more seriously than other countries because it provides a rare opportunity for a team to play as a group against top competition. Not really sure why other countries take a different point of view, but it may explain why USA and Brazil have made the last two finals.
I see from the box score that Karch used 10 players including Micha. I wonder if he will do that in the Olympics.

USA had to win 4 sets to win 3. Appeared to take the first set 26-24, but a highly questionable net touch call on the challenge evened it at 25 before Brazil took it 28-26.

I see from the box score that Karch used 10 players including Micha. I wonder if he will do that in the Olympics. I'm pretty sure that he'll use the whole team in the Olympics, especially in pool play in order to keep the team rested. My guess is that who you saw in the semi's and finals is who you'll see in the Olympics after pool play. I think that Karch put in Drews for Thompson in the last half of both the semi's and the finals. Those two are quite a pair. They can both really smash the ball. It's a big plus for the US that they have really good players that can sub in for starters if the starters are having a bad day or need some rest for some reason. Karch doesn't seem to have a problem substitution in players for starters that aren't doing well. I remember Russ talking about a match, (I think it was a finals appearance for PSU), where he was too loyal to one of his star players and didn't substitute in for them when he should have. No idea who he was talking about.

Hey WestEnder, Do you have any idea what the deal is with Karsta Lowe? I was surprised that she wasn't on the 18 person roster. It could be that she was one of the 23 players that were trying out for the VNL/Olympic roster. I have no clue. I know she was MVP on one of the Gran Prix tournaments. But now she seems to have disappeared, (at least from my sight )

A few years back she stopped playing pro ball and came back to the U.S.; got into coaching IIRC She played in the new AU league this Spring, but the level of play was low. Her biggest attribute was her ability to put the ball down, but she was never a great defender. I imagine, in the end, Drews and JT just beat her out for the position.
For whatever reason, Drews and JT play well when they share the OPP duties/load.
When one is having a bad day, the other comes in and gets the job done. It's nice to have that dynamic at the OPP position.

China is the best team in the world right now. USA won't beat them in group.
At the moment China is 0-2 at the Olympics including a sweep by the USA. I didn't put much weight on VNL results because I felt Karch was experimenting with the lineup. It's hard for the players to get in sync when there are different players on the floor every week.
It's looking at the moment like Karch may be vindicated by his approach and roster selection. Of course anything other than gold and he will be brutally criticized.
Go USA volleyball in the Olympics.
