From what I've seen, not necessarily. I would assume that he's trying to do what's best for the team, development wise. He may put in some "2nd" stringers to give them experience in high pressure situations.(My uninformed opinion ) We are too close to the Olympics for development. IMO, Karch is going to be tweaking his Olympic roster starters. Developmental strategy will resume after the Olympics. The FIVB Women's World Championship next year should be fun to see new up-and-coming players. Good point. Tho I was sort of including tweaking the starters for the Olympics. But then again, it wasn't what I said. What!! You can't read my mind?

I just saw a highlight package that made it seem like Haleigh Washington beat Korea by herself. 5 aces, 4 blocks and 15 points total. Micha set again and found Washington repeatedly. Based on the very valid comments here, I wonder if Karch is saving Carlini and Poulter for the matches that really count.

Yes, Karch may be saving Carlini for the matches that really count . . in 2024. But for Tokyo, he left her as an alternate (I tease; I kid )

Karch is saving Carlini to be a spectator in Japan. I have to admit I thought Micha was the least likely of the three PSU alums to make the final cut. But I thought that without having seen any National team practices so it's next to impossible to know which players are doing the best in the gym when it matters.
Megan is only one injury away from being on the team.
Edit: I want to be perfectly clear I hope no player on any team sustains an injury.
One last thought. The Olympic rule in past years was two alternates max. That may have been changed this time in anticipation of some attrition due to Covid.

Don't count out Megan. She is one injury away from being on the team. I'm with you on all counts -- but I raise you one: not only did I not see any National team practices, even if I had I would have been woefully inadequate at assessing which was doing best in the gym. I'm certain neither of us wish an injury on anyone (let me repeat that lest there be any doubt -- I'm certain we both hope noone is injured) but I'd love to see Courtney see the court in a real Olympic match in Tokyo. Perhaps Aliens can abduct Wong-Orantes for one match, then return her when that match is over? Unharmed (save for an annoying (for Nebraska fans) compulsion to say "John Cook is overrated as a coach; I wish I had gone to Penn State") and with no memory of what transpired while she was gone.

Don't count out Megan. She is one injury away from being on the team. Please clarify. Is it believed that Carlini will not be the number 1 setter? Recognizing that, in a typical year, the VNL matches are not usually the best indicator, from my own untutored observations, all three setters are very capable. There remain observable differences in the three skill sets, and Micha's serve could well be something the staff wants to have available. I also appreciated comments about whether the team will take two Liberos. It sure looks like Wong-Orontes has improved her passing. So I remain concerned that Megan won't be chosen.

You may be pulling my leg, but . . . the 12-person team has been announced. Carlini is not on it. Neither is Megan Courtney. Both are among the six alternates who, according to some reports, will travel to Tokyo (which, as others have noted, would be a departure from prior years).

Kathryn Plummer, who’s one of the six alternates, tweeted this out yesterday.

I'm so glad I wasn't choosing this team. What a difficult task to a) choose the 12 and b) to tell the other 6 that they didn't make it. I take a look at the 6 who didn't make it and they could make a rather impressive squad by themselves. I am so glad that Micha and Haleigh made the squad. Very sad for Megan, (actually all the alternates). Somehow I thought that Carlini had beaten out Poulter. Tho, I'm the world's worst at analyzing setters. Not that I'm a prize at analyzing the other positions. I watched the semi- and finals of the 2019 VNL tournament and it appeared to me that Megan played better during that tournament then she did during the 2021 tournament. Oh well. It appeared to me that Wong Orantes did play better.

Thanks Ethan for that Twitter link. The question now for me is who are the two alternates. The US has always named two alternates in the past.
Karch probably would have announced it with the final 12 roster if there was two. Maybe no alternates this time around? Or maybe six alternates sitting at home unless called to come to Japan in the event of injury or Covid. I don't know. Does anyone have a definitive answer?
I suspect Megan would be the most likely alternate. As I understand the Olympic rules from the past a team can't change the designation of a player from some other position to libero. The only option is to have a libero as an alternate.

I originally heard that the 6 alternates will be traveling to Tokyo as well, but more recently I heard that Japan or the IOC won't allow the alternates for COVID reasons.

The only option is to have a libero as an alternate. I think the alternates would have to travel to Tokyo in an emergency, in case of injury. But, really, I'm confused at this point, because I've heard so many conflicting stories. If only 2 are allowed, then I'd take Wilhite-Parsons (great attacker, not a great of a defender) and Carlini (because I worry about Poulter's health). Robinson can be designated as libero if Wong-Orantes gets injured; she's the best defender, but lowest rated attacker, IMO.
