So, the 2021 season is in the books and it is the perfect time for Russ Rose to retire. I do not say this in disparagement of Russ' coaching. No one can criticize a coach who has clearly been the GOAT of women's volleyball coaching. Rather, as someone who is more than ten years older that Coach Rose, I have experienced the aging process. Russ is still one of the very best coaches in the game! That's exactly the way to leave.
Barring the now unexpected return of any of the seniors, next year's team will be at a level below the play of this year's team. No matter who the coach is, it is going to be, at best, a middle of the pack B1G season. Despite his more than stellar record, Russ is going to begin to hear some criticism. Further, nothing about the 2022 recruiting class suggests that the following season will be any better. More criticism. It's not the way I want to see Coach Rose go out.
On the other hand, a new coach will be given some slack during the first couple of years as she establishes her own style and recruiting strategy. Yes, I would very much like to see a female in the lead role in women's volleyball at our university. It is time!
I don't expect that Russ will retire. Very few athletes or coaches have retired while still near the top of their game. I just think that the timing would be good.

So, the 2021 season is in the books and it is the perfect time for Russ Rose to retire. I have the utmost respect for coach Rose. I believe he can still coach as well and better than anyone in the country. The one question in my mind is his ability to make a personal connection with 15 year old girls for recruiting purposes. He is from a different generation.
Regardless I believe he has the same mindset as Paterno did about retiring. He's not leaving until he is forced out. As long as he continues to make the NCAA tournament I don't see anyone in the administration demanding his retirement. |

Did Gabby receive any awards, and I missed it? She was the one glaring absence from the B1G awards that went to Hord and Parker 1st, Hampton 2nd team. NCAA Regional awards played out the same. As far as the B1G, although Blossom had a bunch of SOW awards, so did others that were on teams that performed better. From what I've observed, if you're on the NCAA Regional list, you end up on the AA list...just a question of 1st, 2nd teams, HM. |
