Edited by nyline: Apologies to nitneliun (the original poster in this thread) but I wasn't able to edit the thread to get the DigNittanyVolleyball article in the first post of this thread, so I've edited this post to do so: Here's a link to DigNittanyVolleyball's article on Coach Rose's retirement (at the end of the article is a link to Penn State's press release): dignittanyvolleyball.com/russ-rose-retires-after-43-seasons-as-penn-state-volleyball-coach/

What I don't understand is if someone has that information, and knows it's a matter of a day or two before a formal announcement is made (if in fact that is the case, and the poster is not simply spouting off), why would they feel compelled to post it on VolleyTalk? An aspect of human nature that bewilders me. Because, if it's true, it's big news--probably the biggest news about PSU Volleyball since the four-year title run. The real question is, if that step has been taken, why hasn't RR or the truly awful AD announced it? What is to be gained by delaying a day or two except to allow more rumors to develop about why the program is in its present state.

First, we don't know that the rumor is true. If it isn't, then that, of course, is a very good reason why nothing has been announced. But if Russ is retiring/resigning, ICA wouldn't want to step on PSU Football's National Signing Day (today) nor on the NCAA WVOL semi-finals tomorrow and the finals on Saturday. I don't see any harm in waiting 4-5 days to make an announcement and having all ducks in a row if, in fact, Russ is retiring.

If he is simply retiring, why have any preliminary discussions before the tournament is over, unless it is to alert interested coaches to a vacancy? Why let something leak to be posted on VolleyTalk? It just increases the speculation about what's going on in the program. The VT post--which could be trolling, of course--doesn't say the coach is retiring but is worded to imply something more concerning: "as of today coach rose is no longer with PSU volleyball program."

You mean RR is in the Portal? Lol.
OK. Here's my hypo... PSU didn't leak this. They're waiting to announce AFTER Saturday. Because they'll announce who the new coach is, but have to wait for the tourney to be completed. So the staff of the new coach inadvertently leaked.

Well, if that is the case it would make perfect sense why so many mice are abandoning ship. RR probable told them of his decision and they took it from there. I think it's possible after all he is not a spring chicken, and he deserves a great retirement. If it's true, I wish him the best no matter where life takes him, he and his teams have given me much pleasure through the years.

Could it be that they are holding off on an announcement until after the tourney ends because the replacement candidate is still coaching? I would imagine if this news is true and Russ is indeed stepping down and not being terminated, conversations would have been had with Russ and his recommended successor.

I like the idea that the leak came from the staff of the incoming coach (certainly preferable to a more troublesome explanation), but it seems unlikely that it is someone still coaching. Is Penn State currently a more desirable position than any of the Final Four Schools? Moreover, three of those coaches are white men and it's inconcievabe that Barbour would hire another white man to replace RR. They might be going hard after Kelly*.
*Dani Busboom Kelly, that is; not Kelly Sheffield.

If Russ is retiring, I doubt we'll see his replacement announced quickly. My guess would be sometime in January. We have no way of knowing how long ago Russ may have informed Barbour that he was retiring, if he has, but it's unlikely Penn State has been in touch with potential replacements while their teams were competing in the tournament.
I don't think it's automatic that Russ's replacement will be female. I don't doubt that Barbour would prefer to hire a female, but hiring a replacement who projects to be highly successful is likely a greater priority for a pretty visible sport with high expectations at Penn State. I do suspect that neither Dennis Hohenshelt nor Katie Schumacher-Cawley would be the choice, but I can only speculate like everyone else.
As to Dani Busboom Kelly, I assume she would be at the top of Barbour's list, but she may not see Penn State as a step up professionally or financially. Could Neeli Bendapudi have any influence with Kelly?
I would put Nebraska AHC Tyler Hildebrand high on the list, too. And it would be great to see Alyssa D'Errico and/or Nicole Fawcett on the new coach's staff, but that's even more speculative.
All of this assumes Russ is retiring, and we don't know that at this hour.

*IF* Russ Rose is retiring, I would LOVE to see Nicole Fawcett. She is my favorite VB player of all time and I think she has the fire that would make a fun contrast to how Coach Rose has coached. I have loved RR's teams and I will love watching/rooting for Penn State forever no matter who is coach.

Very small sample size, and containing almost totally irrelevant info in terms of coaching ability, but I was very impressed by Nicole Fawcett's comments in the Russ video that was released this fall. Having said that, IF Russ is retiring, regardless of Fawcett's qualifications, it would be a huge leap from volunteer coach at Ohio State to Head Coach at Penn State. Stranger things have happened in life (my wife agreeing to marry me, for example -- thankful, thankful, thankful!) but it certainly would be a big step up.

What about Salima? Has she ruled out a return to coaching?

What about Salima? Has she ruled out a return to coaching? My guess is that all other factors put aside, Salima would love to be the HC at Penn State. Unfortunately, we can't put aside all of those other factors.

Arguendo only (because I'm waiting to hear we all got punked): Why would an already-successful coach come to PSU? $$$. I can imagine B1G comp is bigger than most other comp. If I were in Las Vegas, I might be putting money on Salima and Dan Fisher. Maybe bringing Fawcet in as an assistant. I think Hughes could be a dark horse but the emotional bond he has with his players...which really played out this year...makes me doubt it. And UMD is filling their facility now...I'm hoping the university is giving him deserved support. Aird: I don't see it.
