Here’s an interview with KSC on BTN: I think that is a terrific interview, and KSC handled herself well. Time will tell. Fingers-crossed.

I understand that Russ Rose has given alot of credit to assistant coaches who handled recruiting, but I don't think we really know who to credit for recruiting success. I think when recruiting fails, the Head Coach gets blamed (e.g. "Russ Rose can't close the deal on elite OHs anymore" has been a frequent refrain in recent years). I don't know how to allocate success. I would assume that the final decision on who to pursue rested with Russ Rose. The day-to-day execution of the recruiting was in the hands of assistants. Closing the deal was, I assume, in the hands of Russ Rose. I'm not saying Salima wasn't instrumental in recruiting success (and failure) -- I'm just saying I don't know how you apportion either of those metrics. OK. But mathematical impossibility for Coach K to have had A ROLE in identification of/recruitment of players who committed before she was hired at PSU. Can we agree to that? Only been with the team 4 seasons. Yes.

Having 3 daughters is good life experience for a women's VB coach!

Having 3 daughters is good life experience for a women's VB coach! Especially if they're good at VB. Let's see: Setter, MB, Opp? Did I get the order right?

I just finished a 20-minute phone interview with Russ Rose and will be sitting down to transcribe it soon. He spoke at length about KSC, Salima, and many other topics. I’ll post it in a new thread once it’s published.

Volleyball players are good at throwing Tshirts to the crowd. What position did she play for the basketball team?

... The drop off in recruiting success over the past few years does not give me a warm and fuzzy feeling about Katie. I would feel better if she had been a go-getter who brought in some top talent.
I think that the dropoff in recruiting was more a function of the assistant coaches staying at PSU since it is my understanding that they did the majority of the recruiting not RR. If you look at the assistant coaches in 2017, they were
Salima Rockwell Craig Dyer Jon Perry (operations) Dennis Hohenshelt (volunteer).
In 2018 they were:
Dennis Hohenshelt Katie Schumacher-Cawley Chris Rose Virginia Pham.
So the two major assistant coaches changed completely from 2017 to 2018 which means that the assisant coach doing the recruiting changed. I also think that the assistant coaches changed quite a bit from 2013-2014 (not positive about that, but I think so). It obviously didn't hurt the 2014 class , but I think it hurt the recruiting after that. The 2018 class of Hord et all, was excellent, but filling in the pieces around them never happened. PSU have been very fortunate to have two GREAT liberos that overlapped in the last 6 years. But where PSU is lacking is the hitting, as EVERYBODY knows.
My opinion is that the biggest hire KSM will make is the assistant coach who will go out and recruit. This assistant coach needs to be a good recruiter and also an assistant coach that will stay around for a while. THAT is where the rubber hits the road. Granted, KSM will have to coach well , but without the horses, it doesn't matter how good the head coach is.

There's been a lot of turnover, and your point about basically all of the staff turning over is a good one. I'm hopeful the assistant coach salary budget is robust, as perhaps the university saved some money hiring Katie vs. trying to match or exceed the salary of an existing coach at a top program to lure them here. We can make waves with a strong assistant coach hire like Texas and Ohio State have. However, I wonder if bringing another Penn State alum would be too much since Katie is already an alum? You want a good balance of insiders and outsiders...

Just bustin' chops -- but it is KSC -- Katie Schumacher-Cawley.

If Katie is as smart as I think and hope she is, she'll understand her weaknesses as a coach and staff to those weaknesses. Secure the two best assistants who are really good at what Katie thinks she isn't. If that isn't Dennis Hohenshelt, if that isn't an alum who is coaching elsewhere, fine, just get the right people.
