First of all , I am a Boston college guy who has admired Penn state womens volleyball since my son was a freshman at Penn state 15 years ago. so I am on the outside looking in with zero bias that fanatics have about their program that being said the promotion of Russ assistant strikes me as an extremely underwhelming choice that reeks of incompetence or at least poor planning / management of the Penn state womens volleyball persona. best case scenario the selection committee was unable to attract the big fish they recruited (Dan fisher?) due to underwhelming facilities or compensation package? And they were unwilling to take a chance on the many talented up and coming young assistant with the Penn state pedigree That have been discussed. my fear is that the mens program which was elite 15 years ago and is now middling is the path that the womens volleyball program takes in the Uber competitive landscape of the big - and is already being eclipsed by in state rival Pittsburg. I am hoping that the replacement assistant is a high end youthful recruiter as I see a disastrous next couple of years as the program sinks into the bottom tier with Rutgers and misses the tournament…. sorry to bring doom and gloom but that’s what i foresee [Note: Nyline edited the subject line because Katie deserves her name on the billing ]

Penn State will not sink to the same tier as Rutgers even if I was coaching the team.

It seems to me that, in the past, PSU recruiting success was often attributed to the female assistants (Rockwell and Davidson). The drop off in recruiting success over the past few years does not give me a warm and fuzzy feeling about Katie. I would feel better if she had been a go-getter who brought in some top talent.
Having said that, like most fans, I am certainly more than willing to give her a chance to prove my instincts wrong. A great first step would be to convince Blossom, Hord and Parker to return next year!
One other note - I am pleased that a woman was chosen.

And for Katie to hop from a HC job to PSU...I'm thinking Coach saw something better for her than HC at Penn. So although there might have been a blockbuster pick or two that would have been exciting, I think this was a prospect from the time Katie stepped back into Rec Hall.

I agree, and the compensation package PSU offered Fisher must have been pretty good, given that he came ooooooh soooooo close to accepting it (probably did accept, with time to think it over).

I say let's support the decision, Katie may be the right choice, time will tell. I for one have high hopes she can do the job. So let's see if a female coach has any effect on the recruiting, I certainly hope so.

I think everyone is forgetting all of the benefits that PSU volleyball has amidst all the doom and gloom being posted on that other forum. Penn State athletics is doing quite well compared to many other schools, the new coach will come in with just as many fully endowed scholarships as Russ had, the University will still charter to all games, the locker rooms and support structures around the team are the same, and there are still 7 championship trophies on display. Any recruit who chooses Penn State will know that they will play in front of some of the largest crowds in college volleyball outside of a few other places in the country. What were we 6th or 7th in home attendance the last few years, right next to Texas and Florida?
Sell the tradition, sell the rabid home crowds, sell the beautiful campus with great academics, sell the conference TV exposure, sell the Olympic / pro opportunities for our alumni, and I think you can keep PSU volleyball in the hunt in the B1G.

Katie was Plan B or C. Not throwing shade at her...but she obviously wasn't their 1st choice. Now add an assistant or associate HC who is one of the rising stars we've talked about. A recruiting and floor specialist who can compliment Katie.
Best of luck to her and the program.

Everyone seems to value 3 letter acronyms so WE ARE in great shape with KSC!!!
B1G loses a lot of 5th year talent and leadership across the top. This won’t be as cut and dried as people think. PSU program work ethic is not changing and can go a long way.

She was not following a legend and many many people panned her selection and now have anointed her. KSC will do the work. The program will evolve and keep the best elements of the past with perhaps a modern fusion of an element or two. Look at KSCs CV! She has a lot of experience and strong ties into Chicago recruiting, which helps into Wisconsin and Iowa. The club landscape has undergone seismic changes in past 5-6 years. These young women will be developed into the PSU tradition now and in future.
