I hope that I am completely wrong, but I am unenthusiastic about the future of PSU volleyball. Aside from my disappointment in the selection of the head coach, I am unhappy that one of the several qualified former players was not hired in an assistant capacity. My gut tells me that an enthusiastic female assistant would be a significant asset in recruiting.
I can't help but contrast the atmosphere here with the enthusiasm at Notre Dame. KSC was clearly nervous in her first press conference and didn't engender any increase in my enthusiasm.
I am an alumnus of Penn State (graduating well before we even had a volleyball team) and will continue to root for the home team. Perhaps I am completely misreading the future success of the team. I really, really, really hope so!
p.s. still waiting to see if we retain Kaitlyn and/or Jonni

I would caution people not to jump to conclusions months before KSC’s first match as head coach at Penn State. The players have been very enthusiastic about the hire of her and both assistant coaches on social media and in person at today’s event. I think there’s something to be said for keeping things relatively consistent and not bringing in a complete outsider who might upend the culture of the team in a negative way at the outset. I’ll post the transcript of KSC and Sandy Barbour’s remarks here once I’m done with it tonight. I also took a bunch of photos and will throw them in a folder for people to check out.

First off, sizzle is fun, but it doesn't win matches. Steve Aird has some great sizzle, but he hasn't won alot of matches. I thought that after some initial "nervousness" (I think it might better be characterized as "emotion" -- this was an incredibly emotional day for her, if you think about it) she was poised, gave thoughtful answers (the acoustics were clearly a bit of a problem) and was very comfortable (e.g. "like the Cubs hat! Chicago girl" and "you've got a Cubs hat too!"). She can't talk about who might be coming in to the program. I think she will be an excellent head coach -- but time will tell. I know that a message board like DigNittanyVolleyball Forum is the place to dissect everything to the Nth degree, so I'm not being critical here, but like Ethan, I think we should avoid jumping to conclusions based on things like press conferences.

Exciting and entertaining the message board crowd is NOT the goal of hiring. I agree, KSC and Toron as her assistant are not exciting hires, but they might well be the best hires for their jobs. Only time will tell that. I like the experience that Gwitt and Toron bring to the table, and in Toron's case, KSC already understands what chemistry he brings to the coaching room and the practice court, and chemistry is the most underrated success factor in team endeavors.
Katie hasn't been great at press events so far, but that will improve with experience, and winning press conferences has nothing to do with winning on the court.

Surprised no questions got to that. Sure she would have dodged it, but I would have tried to have asked.

I have no idea how things will turn out. I can only wait for the season to start. I certainly give KSC a minimum two year grace period before making any long term conclusion. My expectations are not high for this season so the only surprise would be to the upside.
If Hord were to stay one more year that would be an endorsement for KSC. However the longer it goes with no word the more I expect Hord is going to transfer. PSU has to start recruiting on the basis of knowing how many scholarships are available and must move on if they don't hear from Hord.

Can we drop the Lady Lion thing? She's a Nittany Lion. Period. Treating women athletes and coaches as distaff / co-educational / adjunct / auxilliary is way past. They are entitled to the FULL respect of the university and its fans.

It’s in reference to her time playing for the Penn State Lady Lions basketball team, which still officially goes by that name.
