I hope this was just a sympathy effort against a popular former PSU coach the players really liked.

1,183-183? 1,183-182? Not really sure, Apologies, I know it's close and I'm too lazy to check. I'll blame "my" slacker staff. He should get double congrats as he has to endure games like tonight.

I'm listening to a replay of the audio broadcast of the match. Laura Broerman does a nice, and brutally honest, assessment of PSU's play.

Laura does a nice job. Maryland's announcers are among the best student announcers I've heard this season.

Just finished watching the match. From what I saw the main reason Maryland won set 1 is because they went for broke on the serving and got us all out of wack. Also, they were hitting off the block all set. Don't understand why we didn't adjust but we didn't. Our block was non-existent that set. Seems like we started to do better in set 2 and 3 but still seemed off a little. They are still going after balls that should be left alone to go out of bounds and they also are not communicating like they should as attested to the few times they ran into each other. Focus was not there the whole night. That was evident. Megan hit a lot of balls out which is not usual for her. And finally, Maryland burned us on a few deep lobs.

VB score.docx (23.72 KB)
For the most part they looked tired, scary tired. Their faces looked blank, drawn, no emotion, certainly little spark.
Attached is a paper scoring sheet (just like you used in middle school). Now you can use it when the BTNtoGo streaming doesn’t have a scoreboard which is often.

I guess I'll skip watching it when you upload it.

I see the Maryland match as a poor performance against a team that was 2-10 in the Big Ten, and which was runover by Nebraska. This is not the first time this season that PSU has played down to the level of their competition, something I cannot recall previous PSU teams doing. You never know which PSU team will show up, the one that played reasonably well, well at times, vs. Wisconsin, Illinois, Ohio State, or the one that played poorly vs. Northwestern and Maryland. If this team is a serious contender in the tournament it should be blasting through these lower ranked Big Ten teams.

If this team is a serious contender in the tournament it should be blasting through these lower ranked Big Ten teams. You're correct. Inconsistency is what's plaguing this team right now. The numbers don't lie. This team doesn't compare with the previous 6 National Championship teams. I will post a comparison of the most relevant stats on my thread "RPI and Tourney and Stats" this weekend, which shows what I'm talking about. Does that mean they don't have a shot at winning it all? Absolutely not, they're about as good as any other top team right now. No D1 team is running away statistically, but PSU will have to battle come tourney time to "grind" out wins against tougher opponents. Of course, there are some positive intangibles which this team has: 1) Experience in big matches (especially late in the tourney), 2) Talent across the board, that can go to another level, 3) Great program mentality and coaching, just to name a few...

Laura does a nice job. Maryland's announcers are among the best student announcers I've heard this season. I agree on both counts. I was super-impressed with the Maryland announcers -- very knowledgeable and able to describe the match without interjecting too much homerism.
