Wasn't able to play during the game, but at least I got to watch. I don't think PSU believed they could win. I think they scared themselves with how close they were. You could be right. I think more likely is . . . Nebraska was . . . . better. I don't think there's any doubt that Nebraska had/has a better team. Nevertheless, PSU found themselves ready to take the next step. One of the nice things about the ESPN coverage compared to the streaming I've watched the last few weeks is that you could actually "see" the player's expressions. To me, they looked surprised--like "what are we doing here?" Just my impression. So close. I hope the experience makes them hungry, not dejected.

I had a somewhat different reaction on Ali's face that was defiant: almost "I am back" but that is rather dramatic and I do not know if Ali has that personality set. BUT HERE IS TO HER FOR BEARING THE HEAVY JOB AND NEVER FLINCHING!

To me these players just announced we are now showing you that we can play away and do well away from the REC HALL CROWD:24 all in the 3rd after taking the first two.

I believe that if we had a good terminating Opposite, we would've swept Nebraska.

BUT HERE IS TO HER FOR BEARING THE HEAVY JOB AND NEVER FLINCHING! From what little I know, she absolutely has that kind of personality. I thought she looked very, very determined out there. I'm sure there were moments, and exceptions, but generally speaking, I thought they all did.

Could Reed be that person? I don't think she's there yet, maybe not even close, but she certainly has the athleticism. And whether it was the surprise factor, or whether something has clicked with her, she performed fairly well (4 kills, 2 errors, .154 in 13 swings, plus 3 blocks). It seems Cami May really is a middle (i.e. doesn't seem like a candidate to switch), but who knows. Or maybe Gorrell could play right side (though she is so quick side-to-side as a middle, it would be a shame to lose that). At any rate, there will be at least one new player in May, and for all we know, someone will transfer in (Detering was not expected; the unexpected can happen). Oh, and Heidi Thelen might just continue to improve and surprise us. The position was new to her this season -- not bad for a novice.

If Lee and Frantti aren't terminating OHs, with 40+ Ks v NE, don't know who is. I hate to say it, because I love them, but I thought Gorrell and Thelen didn't have their best game, or NE neutralized them. Just a little more success from those 2 would've given us the edge. I LOVED Coach's use of the 2 setters with the Reed substitution. Complex, smart, effective. B Weis was composed and here's to our hitters who had to take sets from 2 different setters. Those first 3 sets will go down as the fiercest this 2016 has played. I'm wondering whether the rotation adjustment (set 4?) was a good choice, in the end.

It's tough when looking at in-match adjustments in hindsight. I think we've got a good chance at getting far in the tourney next season. Perhaps even a top 2 finish in the B1G and top 5 finish nationally. I only hope Russ picks tougher opponents in the preseason, so RPI doesn't because an issue again.

I am a Thelan fan but agree that she was not quite strong enough for the Opp. She is/was a fairly good middle.
I had some crazy ideas about how to solve the right side next year. First, Lee hit from the right on some rotations this year and was successful. She is super athletic, does not need a running start and swings very hard. Since she and Frantti both seem to be 6 rotation options, could Lee slide over there? The other even crazier idea is maybe Washington could play more right side and Thelen and Gorrell could handle the middle position. Washington played 4 rotations this year, and seems capable of doing what Thelen tried to do this year (eg: hit from different spots) so there may be some options. Probably both nutty ideas, but fun to think about.
I am encouraged that coach was willing to use his bench players in a match of this importance. Clearly, both Gorrell and Thelan played their best this year against slightly lower level competition. Ultimately though, the more consistent the setters can be, the greater success the team will have. I thought the setting in this final match was mostly good but still left some room for improvement. The middles both received some poor sets which hurt both Gorrell and Washington, and ultimately left the team too one sided.

Not sure that setting is still the problem that all seemed to believe. If you watched Carlini carefully you could see how the less consistent passing from her receivers was responsible for her inability to get away from the dominating block. Pull the setter on the back side of the 3 meter line and she begins to lose have choices. Pull her more to the center and she is almost required to set the left side OH. Note however that his talented youngster set a number of back sets some major distance from the attack zone to attempt to overcome the blocking that was very very solid in the last three sets. You'al may not like her but you must admire her abilities.

But there were some nice, successful attacks during the match that seemed to escape the attention of the NE block. seemed like old times when Whitney and A Scott used to hammer it down. ahhh, memories.

We've sorely missed what A. Scott and Whitney brought--the ability to go over almost any block and pound the ball. Let's hope Coach Rose finds another terminator soon.
