Agree that Washington seemed less successful with the slide this year than in past years-though her overall hitting percentage was still top of the charts. Also felt like Bryanna was better getting the ball out to the right pin than Abby, but Abby was much better with the quicks to Gorrell.
Given the length of the season and the relatively close albeit slightly different skills Abby and Bryanna seem to have, I sort of hope we see a 6/2 much more next year. Of course if we find a super transfer, or either (or both!) of our setters improve, then the calculus will change.

It seems a consensus view that the 6-2 won't get a team to the final four. It's mostly used if you have 2 mediocre setters. Here's to hoping that both our setters can play great next year. I really think PSU is final four bound next season.

The 6/2 often seems a lot like rotating quarterbacks in football (eg: if you have two QBs you really have none). However, if both setters are good, and there is a better blocker/hitter standing on the sideline, then the tactic might actually be beneficial. Certainly the setter dump/swing is important, but mostly as a surprise tactic. Since neither Bryanna nor Abby are spectacular blockers, perhaps the approach will make sense.
I note by way of support for the proposition that our Olympic team used a modified 6/2 in Brazil. Something like that might work for us next year.

I just rewatched the PSU-Nebraska third round game -- until the point in set three when PSU was up 24-22. You know something? PSU really has a good team. They're just a few ifs and buts away from a very successful 2017 season. I hope Frantti's healthy for the entire season.
I'm starved for interaction. Write something! Anything! Open a threads for posting kid, pet, and grandkid pix.

I've heard the phrase "lack of connectedness" to describe one aspect of their woes last season. Coach Rose was quoted after that match saying that some of the players (I'm paraphrasing here) didn't "want it" enough -- or something like that. I think with the influx of talent, and the growth that typically occurs from year-to-year, this "really good team" could also be a "really successful team."

The 2017 team will be a senior heavy team with the top recruiting class of 2014 reaching maturity. The team should be stronger than last year with the added year of experience plus a couple of new women who could have a positive impact. They will likely enter the season as the big ten favorites.
Although the 2018 and 2019 recruiting classes are looking good, I think 2017 is the teams best chance for a national title for the next few years.

I think that's probably right -- if only because the 2018 and 2019 teams will, by comparison, be very young.

Well isn't the real question how well our setter (er setters?) play? As we have seen so often, a high quality setter can make average hitters look better, while an average setter can make high quality hitters look less so.
The point here is that Bryanna has two eligible years, and if she gets better and is not subbing in and out, it is conceivable that 2018 team might do better than 2017 even though we are graduating top level hitters.

Possible but not probable. Coach Rose holds Gabby Blossum in high regards and Bryanna has had several chances to take over the setter position. In 2018 we will have an extremely young team and it will need time to jell. I think 2019 may be a very good year though.

The possibilities are almost endless, especially as we look into the distant future. But since the possibilities abound, and late summer is in the almost distant future, let's let our imaginations run wild. Who was that Chinese guy that said, "Let 1,000 Flowers Bloom?"

Bob and gnu make excellent points. I do often wonder about how long it takes a team to gel (jell? How is that word spelled?). Micha seemed to fit in instantly. Perhaps Micha was (and is) a unique talent.

Perhaps Micha was (and is) a unique talent. I'm hoping PSUMAUI returns to the fold. All of his game videos have disappeared and I'm missing my Micha fixes. She was special and I'm hoping she gets a chance to set for the national team. As a volleyball fan, I was happy to see Wisconsin's former setter named as America's best amateur athlete. But as a PSU fan, I'm happy that Micha was 5-0 head-to-head against the Badger setter.

We need to be careful believing that Bryanna will be at PSu for two more years. I have heard next year is her last because she will graduate.
