Karch gave her praises when she was at Penn State. I'm sure he doesn't take her for granted! From what I heard, Karch is mixing and matching all the players to see what works best during the Pan Am Cup. He doesn't have a set starting team yet. I do love it that Micha is Carlini's Captain! I wish you could have seen Micha's 7 ace run. Just the look on the Venezuela players faces after each ace was priceless! They kept looking at each other with a puzzled, maybe stunned is a better word, look on their faces. The USC players had the same look after her first aces back in 2011. Welcome back! We've missed you. Thanks! Today's match against Puerto Rico will be a good test for them.

USA survive big test against Puerto Rico CAÑETE, Peru, June 19, 2017 – An intense volleyball battle took place at Lolo Fernandez Coliseum when the United States claimed a 3-2 (25-23, 25-23, 23-25, 21-25, 15-12) victory over Puerto Rico carried by opposite Elizabeth McMahon who finished with 27 points. The scoring was tight from start to finish and while United States pressed with a varied offense thanks to the contributions from middle blocker Rhamat Alhassan and Michele Bartsch-Hackley with 14 and 13 points, Puerto Rico was aggressive with their attackers Daly Santana, Marie Victoria and Ana Sofía Jusino with 26, 19 and 11 points, respectively. Micha Hancock, Captain of United States: “Making so many points with my serves is a challenge that grows bigger for me because my team is counting on me to do that, but with every new day I have to face teams with better reception. In the game we battled well but we need to improve some little things. We are missing some easy balls.” Daly Santana, top scorer of Puerto Rico: “At the beginning our attack was soft so we learned that we had to be more aggressive and had to improve our defense with touches in the blocking to slow down their attack and reach the fifth set. We will go happy because despite the loss we learned many things.” Karch Kiraly, Coach of United States: “The opponent played very well and it was a big challenge for us because we have a young group which is learning how to move forward in tough matches. The most important lesson learned today is that we need to communicate more when we are in the court.” Javier Gaspar, Coach of Puerto Rico: “Our game plan was until certain point an effective one. But then we made some changes that worked well like the use of middle blocker Alba Hernandez and also our serves was more effective pressing their reception. At the end one mistake in the last few minutes was the key for them to carry with the win.”

Part of being a winner is winning when things aren't going well.

USA score easy victory over Mexico CAÑETE, Peru, June 20, 2017 – United States roared past Mexico in straight sets 3-0 (25-13, 25-15-25-13) to remain undefeated in Pool A of the XVI Women’s Volleyball Pan American Cup by Movistar at Lolo Fernandez Coliseum on Tuesday. The United States have a 4-0 win-loss record with 18 points while Mexico is still looking for their first win and sits at 0-4. Andrea Drews and Madison Kingdom topped the USA scoring with 15 and 12 points, respectively, while Mallory McCage and Megan Courtney added 9 and 7 points in the loss. [] Mexico’s Andrea Rangel finished with 9 points in the victory. The winners outclassed their opponents in blocks (11-2), aces (13-1) and attacks (36-20). The United States close their preliminary phase schedule facing Argentina on Wednesday while Mexico meets Colombia. Andrea Drews, Top scorer of United States: “Different than yesterday today we played more relaxed and secure. We are satisfied with the job done thus far and we will keep battling in every match to reach the finals.” Karch Kiraly, Coach of United States: “Our strategy today was neutralize Andrea Rangel who is the main offensive weapon of Mexico. Also we tried to improve our system of communication in the court, something we missed in the match against Puerto Rico.” Andrea Rangel, Captain of Mexico: “We knew it was going to be difficult but we entered the court with attitude and to enjoy the game. We didn’t go to win but to do a god job and our best effort. Our main goal is to win against Colombia tomorrow and to keep growing for future competitions.” Ricardo Naranjo, Coach of Mexico: “We know the United States are a powerhouse so we talked to the girls about not being afraid of making mistakes. If you look at the score, the difference was big, but analyzing the plays there are strategies that worked for us and we will continue working.”

Any thoughts on the match with Argentina tomorrow? Easier than Mexico? I have no clue, but I can't resist the urge to post. After a quick glance at the standings, I'd say few teams are worse than Mexico. I think Puerto Rico beat Argentina 3-1? Maybe a close game. If we get something close to optimal performance, maybe we win 3-1. Don't think Micha will get 50 aces this year, but I'd love to see her prove me wrong.

Spoiler alert: USA v ARG our girls in 3, but sets 1 and 3 were very close. Just my observation: Watching them play these games looks like some of newly college grads don't seem to be up to the next level speed of the game yet. What do you think? Next game for Team USA vs one of the 4 teams TBD and will be on Sat 6:00pm ET.

USA wins Pool A with victory over Argentina CAÑETE, Peru, June 21, 2017 – The United States claimed the first position in Pool A after the conclusion of the preliminary phase of the XVI Women’s Volleyball Pan American Cup by Movistar on Sunday at Lolo Fernandez Coliseum of Lima. The young team from United States defeated Argentina 3-0 (27-25, 25-14, 25-23) to earn the direct ticket to the semifinals with a 5-0 win-loss record and 23 points. Andrea Drews and Madison Kingdom scored 16 and 11 points, respectively, as the best scorers for the winners. Paula Yamila Nizetih had 14 points in the losing effort. Andrea Drews, top scorer of USA: “Argentina presented a different formation to what we expected but these are situations you have to learn how to control. They did a good job at blocking and we tried to do our game. We established our offense and hopefully we can keep improving and learning to control the little details.” Karch Kiraly, Coach of USA: “The team of Argentina did a good job at blocking. I think we still have to improve things in defense and offense but I know that match after match we will continue growing.” Yamila Nizetich, top scorer of Argentina: “Argentina came from less to more but that also happened with the level of our opponent. Today we could have the kind of game we wanted because we have several players who are sick and had to rotate the formation and couldn’t press with the serve and couldn’t react to their fast tempo. For the upcoming matches we will be better and we will show our real rhythm,” Guillermo Orduna, Coach of Argentina: “Today we could not field our regular team since several players have health problems but hopefully they will recover for the next matches. In quarterfinals we will play against Peru, a strong team playing at home but we came prepared physically and mentally to face all the rivals we have to.”

I'll take consolation in knowing that the previous record was 28 for the NORCECA tournament. I think she'll top that. Thanks for posting.

I just watched the first two sets of the USA-Argentina match. This is not as good as B1G volleyball. The passing is so bad! "How bad is the passing?" The passing is so bad, it looks like the setter is playing monkey in the middle.
I was truly disappointed in the quality of play. If this is what 15 subs have have done to volleyball players, the NCAA needs to go back to 12 subs.
Yikes!

Micha is dealing with quite a few new players that I don't think have caught up the the speed of this level of play yet. I think that is why the bad passing so far that is making Micha and Carlini have to run all over the court. These women may have been the top of their class in college but many of them have a ways to go to catch up to the speed of this level of play.
