We've posted a write-up on the Michigan match, with quotes from Coach Rose, Ali Frantti, and Simone Lee. Click Here for the post. I'm surprised Simone was singled out for having trouble with Michigan's block because she only had 4 errors on 15 kills. Ali had 4 errors on 9 kills. Every player seem to have a solid performance on offense and defense. It was a team victory. Sounds like Coach keeping competitive juices flowing. Imagine coming into November and December with a front line of OHs and MB hitting .300+, plus RSs at .250+, and Washington (she needs her own MB category) hitting .500+. That's a powerful offensive line-up! And they're heading in that direction. Also nice to hear Coach Rose commend Frantti and Lee for their middle back defense. They're heading in the right direction.

When Coach Rose starts talking about telling the players how hard it is to do well in the B1G and Tournament... my pulse quickens. I think he thinks there's hope.

We'll see if he thinks there's hope after matches against Minnesota, Wisky and Michigan State. Fair enough. I thought his comment in the press conference was intended to communicate to his players that it's a very tough road ahead, they can't succeed without working very, very hard, but there's no guarantee that will be enough. He is very clear-eyed about things. Thirty-nine years of coaching will do that to you, I suppose.

I'm being perhaps uncharacteristically optimistic. My read is that Coach mentioned it to squelch irrational exuberance in the locker room and the fan base. BUT... If he's telling the players how hard it is to go deep in the tournament, it might mean he thinks they need to be prepared. So, if they get bounced in the Sweet 16, I'll take all the warranted abuse.

Russ voted Penn State #1 in today's AVCA poll. He usually doesn't place PSU #1 even if he thinks they are the best team.

I don't think I remember him voting Penn State #1 since the good ole days of 2008 when he said that there isn't one player from across the net that he would take over any of his players. I take his voting the team #1 as his current confidence in his teams ability and will to take it all! Still have a bunch of people refusing to vote Penn State over Stanford for #1 even with two wins against them. I have been watching Stanford for many of their conference matches and I just don't see it. Right now Plummer is all they have. Right now she's not nearly as effective as she was against us. She got her large amount of kills against Penn State but still lost and when comparing both teams right now, Stanford is not better than Penn State. Penn State has greatly improved both defensively and offensively since those Stanford matches, where I see hardly any improvement in Stanford. This says to me, that the PAC12 is not as strong as these voters want to think. I call it the "Penn State syndrome". Watched College football show after the games this weekend and you would think people would see Penn State Football team as the #2 team in playoff scenario if they started playoffs today but you would be wrong because one of the persons picking had this seeding order for the playoff 4 teams: 1: Alabama; 2:TCU, 3: Georgia (who jumped above other undefeated teams for a few weeks in a row) and 4: Clemson (just lost to unranked team). Another person made these picks: 1:Alabama; 2:Georgia; 3:TCU and 4:Penn State. Jumping both Georgia and TCU above Penn State. You just have to shake your head on some of the voters and move on or it will drive you crazy.

I desperately want them to host a regional. Coach may be voting for the team because he thinks it may improve his chances to host? For football, I think PSU has a tougher time making the case that they're number 2 or 3. Why? I don't think they've executed well on offense. I'm hoping they can get past Michigan and OSU over the next two weeks. If they do, they won't have anything to worry about. If they don't they won't have anything to worry about when it comes to seeding.

It is hard to describe, but it feels like there is a basis for optimism. Even if the ladies lose one or two League matches, I will continue thinking well of this group. They just look more "connected" (to circle back to a series of interesting posts on this site from before the season). I feel like every match we are seeing the team tracking down balls in the stands, keeping rallys going, fighting for points. They have faced one of (if not the) toughest schedules and done very well (except for the Nebraska drubbing). Different players are chipping in, and many of the wins have been despite subpar performances by one player or another. In fact, a few of the wins resulted from inconsistent opponent play, which may actually be an attribute of the grit which has been demonstrated time and again. This all leads to a belief that this team is a true contender.
On top of all that, I don't recall the staff making such radical systemic adjustments, including in the middle of a match (ala Friday night's performance). This shows that we have a coach who is not stubbornly set in his ways, and is willing to consider different strategies. Such open mindedness is only possible because we have experienced players who don't mind being in different roles. Abby Detering, Heidi Thelen and even the DS crew, are seemingly ready to perform and do whatever is needful on short notice.
In short, this is not the most talented Penn State team I have seen, but I think it is the toughest. So, if they fall early in the tournament, you can blame me too. (No reason Nyline should have the blame all to himself).

What the heck is wrong with you people, they are not going to lose! Im not sure PSU volleyball will lose more than 1 of the remaining if any. I think it may be all or nothing for PSU football. If they win against Michigan they beat OSU. If they lose ....they lose in Columbus.

I think Penn State is the best team in the country and might not lose more than one more match during the regular season. However your trash talking about other teams, conferences, and players is the type of attitude that gave a bad reputation to some Penn State fans on another message board.
