I don't think I remember him voting Penn State #1 since the good ole days of 2008 when he said that there isn't one player from across the net that he would take over any of his players. I take his voting the team #1 as his current confidence in his teams ability and will to take it all! Still have a bunch of people refusing to vote Penn State over Stanford for #1 even with two wins against them. I have been watching Stanford for many of their conference matches and I just don't see it. Right now Plummer is all they have. Right now she's not nearly as effective as she was against us. She got her large amount of kills against Penn State but still lost and when comparing both teams right now, Stanford is not better than Penn State. Penn State has greatly improved both defensively and offensively since those Stanford matches, where I see hardly any improvement in Stanford. This says to me, that the PAC12 is not as strong as these voters want to think. Long time viewer, first time poster. I think Penn State is the best team in the country and might not lose more than one more match during the regular season. However your trash talking about other teams, conferences, and players is the type of attitude that gave a bad reputation to some Penn State fans on another message board. I'm sorry, but I don't see this as "trash talking". These are my observations. In other words, my opinion.

What's most striking to me is that 47 coaches other than Rose called us #1. After what, 2 votes last week? Very fickle group, IMO.
In the end, it's only a vote and doesn't matter. as John Houseman used to say about Smith Barney being #1...THEY EARN IT. We'll know at a later date.
For now, enjoy!!

I look forward to your posts. The site does have a partisan flavor, it would be hard to be totally white bread -- or as boring as those announcers for the Kentucky-Florida match. If something bothers you, it's good to address the issue. I've been known to let go with some less than well considered pronouncements, but we try to be respectful to each other and I'm hard-pressed to think of any discourse that approaches what I've seen and experienced on another message board.

In the way of full disclosure I want to briefly give my background. I graduated from Penn State in 1973 (before there was a varsity volleyball team), got a job in southern California, and have lived here since. My son went to Stanford and dated a VB player. I have been a Stanford WVB fan ever since. I follow both teams but must admit in matches between the two I cheer for Stanford. If that is grounds for banishment from this site, I understand. I remain a diehard Penn State football fan.
FWIW I want to compliment the civility and respectful comments on this site. It is very unusual for a sports message board.

Coach Rose always speaks very highly of Stanford's program, and respected John Dunning as someone who did things the right way.

The more I think about, the more I believe that the loss to Nebraska was an aberration. I think this was a trap match for us. PSU was coming off a weak pre-conference weekend and Nebraska was hungry for a win. PSU was not prepared to play the Huskers and the Huskers executed perfectly in all facets. I only wish we could have played them again this season, I really believe we would have beat them.
Having said that, Michigan State and Wisconsin (both away matches) will be tough, but they don't scare me. So, I think 3 conference losses get us a top 4 seed; that is we will have a 77% chance to host a regional (see below). I'm not counting the Minnesota match (in MN) because the Selection Committee completes the bracket before the last game of the season is played.
Here's Bluepenquin's RPI futures based on how many conference wins we can expect to have at the end of the season: Note, there are 20 conference matches in all and we've played 8 so far and have a 7-1 conference record.

I would think that fans of all teams are welcome here. I personally don't see any "trash" talking by psumaui . His posts, relative to Volleytalk, are very, very mild. Keep in mind, because this is a Penn State site there will be plenty of opinions with a "blue and white" hue, but all opinions are welcome as they bring something new to the table. For what it's worth, I think there are several posters here who have a lot of respect for the Stanford program, myself included.

Russ voted Penn State #1 in today's AVCA poll. He usually doesn't place PSU #1 even if he thinks they are the best team. I don't think I remember him voting Penn State #1 since the good ole days of 2008 when he said that there isn't one player from across the net that he would take over any of his players. This says to me, that the PAC12 is not as strong as these voters want to think. I call it the "Penn State syndrome". Watched College football show after the games this weekend and you would think people would see Penn State Football team as the #2 team in playoff scenario if they started playoffs today but you would be wrong because one of the persons picking had this seeding order for the playoff 4 teams: 1: Alabama; 2:TCU, 3: Georgia (who jumped above other undefeated teams for a few weeks in a row) and 4: Clemson (just lost to unranked team). Another person made these picks: 1:Alabama; 2:Georgia; 3:TCU and 4:Penn State. Jumping both Georgia and TCU above Penn State. You just have to shake your head on some of the voters and move on or it will drive you crazy. Very strong analysis. Great post.

Does that mean you're a fan of the tree? To tell you the truth, he got on my nerves in OK City. Otherwise, I have nothing against Stanford when we're not on the court against them. Under Dunning they seemed to be not only a good team, but also and ethical one, which you cannot say about some of the newcomers to BIG.

I've seen a few Stanford matches this season and I think his observations are spot on. As for the strength of the PAC-12, I don't see how anyone can deny that conference is down this year. Washington, USC and UCLA have all failed to meet expectations to some degree.

Backing that viewpoint, look at the RPI update on another thread on this site: it compares how the PAC and BIG are doing in the RPI. If you find the RPI relevant, i believe 3 BIG teams are in top 5. Top PAC team is #7. Am I citing this out of bias? No. I'm surprised, especially because this is rare. But there it is.

OK, I will jump on the bandwagon. Stanford is bad. Pac-12 is bad. B1G is the greatest. Plummer is all Stanford has and she is not "nearly as effective" as she use to be.
