This may come as a shock to many of you, but I don't, at least at the moment, have any clever insights as to what next season holds. I have noticed that you do. Many of the observations I've read in the Semifinal Thread have included your insights as to what might happen next season.
So, I thought I'd provide a thread for our early thoughts about what comes next.

Can I use this thread to do some reflection, too? Do you think Coach used the 6-2 this season because he had 2 very good setters but not 1 great setter? Will we have to play it again next season? Is it a must for us to have one great setter to win the NC? If so, do we have a potential great one coming into the program? Reports are that we have a great 2018 group coming in. The 2014 group was rated #1 for good reason. I think Coach Rose seemed frustrated that they didn't play to their full potential during their Soph and Junior seasons. This season they came together and had better leadership. But you never know -- we had to play a converted MB oftentimes on the right-side, and may have that again based on the 2018 class. And you never know who will keep developing, like Haleigh and Simone, and who plateaus like Ali. Bless them all.

Welcome.
And there aren't any "rules" on this forum other than basic decorum--no insults, profanity, politics.
A thread title is a suggestion. So, this thread is an invitation to discuss the future.
Reflecting on the past season, and other seasons; or players' careers could be other threads.
If something doesn't match what you'd like to discuss, start a thread. This is a "marketplace of ideas."
Thanks for contributing.

I am not a Volleyball expert but with all the seniors graduated, let's evaluate the current roster:
1) #1 Kathryn Cather, a RS and has not seen the floor at PSU
2) #6 Nia Reed, an OH but only play 3 rotation
3) #17 Michaela Putnicki, an OH but has not seen her on the bench for sometimes.
We will have a setter (Bryanna) coming back, a new setter coming in (Gabby) so at least we are set there.
We will have a RS coming in, Jonni Parker, assuming she can play OH with Nia and Cather plays RS. We are not sure Jonni can play 6 rotations as we know Nia can not. We will have 3 MB coming in and Serena Gray has a body type that can play OH so I hope she can. From youtube, she can also hit the pipe so she may be able to convert to OH. I hope RR can find a 6 rotation OH to transfer to PSU otherwise, our DS will be super busy.
I have 100% trust in RR and I am sure he will figure out, but my opinion, 2018 will be a challenge.
WE ARE.....

Well I am pretty sure Michaela is not coming back I believe nyline said he followed her on facebook and she was homesick. If that is the case I wish her well and hope everything works out for her. I saw video of Jonni Parker and she looks legit I have seen video of Kat and she also looks good. The reason she did not play this year is I think she had a concussion early in practice, if you saw her in some early games standing on the side she was wearing sunglasses. And maybe Russ Rose decided to red shirt her I don't know but that would be my guess. And if I could guess with any certainty I might have won the lottery. But that being said I have faith in RR that he knows what he is doing.

IMO Wisconsin has to be considered the front runner for winning the B1G championship next year. It is anyone's guess for the second place candidate. It could be Penn State or quite a few other teams. Does anyone question the idea that next year Penn State will not be putting as much proven talent on the court as it did this year?

I don't know anything about concussion protocol. Are sunglasses considered a precaution for someone suffering from a concussion? Do bright lights cause headaches for someone with a concussion?

2 Transfer multi year scholarships are available next year from what I understand. Pudnicki is long gone and we will have a medical redshirt available it seems
So TBA on transfers ....OHs would be my guess.

Really interesting point about whether Nia can go 6. How do we know/not know? Starting w/the 2016 last match, Coach put her in a spot where she didn't have to play back row. I don't know what they have her do in practice, and whether she was simply weaker than Frantti and Lee. I'm curious about data/info on this because I cannot think of an OH Coach had who did not play 6. That would be a real departure...but as we saw in 2017, Coach is willing to base the line-up and rotation on the players he has, rather on his predetermined system.
My view on the setter system for 2018: i don't think 2017 is a predictor. Starting w/the last match of 2016, Coach saw an opportunity to use a very feisty setter as a front-row hitter. I saw that as a one-off, not a new forever-more system for PSU... On the other hand, I thought i heard something about Parker hitting sometimes. At this point, I doubt Coach even knows. I doubt spring season will reveal where we'll be in August.
As for who will play what, I remember Megan Courtney was a setter in HS (and listed as OH/S evermore on our roster). tHelen was a MB. Hancock was a possibility as a hitter. Many of our DS corps were hitters or setters. HS coaches often are not very imaginative in how they choose to position their players; Coach sees things that aren't often predictable, except to say that he is very good in spotting talent, athleticism and coachability.

I don't follow any recruits or players on social media. Also, I think it was Cather who was wearing sunglasses at one point, not Putnicki.

A couple of things. About Parker and Blossom, here's a link to a write-up of the UnderArmour game in which they both played. Blossom had a match-high 29 assists, 2 aces in 15 serve attempts (no errors), and 4 kills on 6 attempts (no errors). Parker had 13 kills on 40 swings (5 errors -- .200 hitting %) -- second on the East squad to Thayer Hall's 29 kills on 70 swings with 7 errors (.314). Parker had 4 reception errors, 1 dig, and 5 solo blocks (that's what it says; who knows). Blossom had 1 block assist and 8 digs. Parker and Blossom both played four of the five sets in the match. About the 6-2, here's what Coach Rose had to say after the semi-final match against Nebraska:

Sorry Nyline as I said in the post I believe, but as usual I was wrong. And in the post I said it was Kat with sunglasses not Michaela.

Having coached volleyball for more than 10 years I can say quite frankly that you just do not know what players can do until you see them doing it. Some look very good but as Russ found out some that he brought in just did not make the grade at this level. If he cannot tell for sure I doubt any of us can.

Michaela Putnicki's club, Colorado Juniors, is reporting that she has transferred to Wichita State.
