The slacker staff seems ready to deliver the goods this year. Pass along my kudos for a great write-up. I think they've successfully communicated a "feel" for this year's team. I think I even experienced a couple twinges of optimism. Bring on the back row!

Nyline you and your slacker staff deserve a night out for some fun. It is always a pleasure to read the insights you bring to the table. Keep up the good work. Kudos from a loyal Penn State fan.

Nyline you've done it again! Great warm up for the fans.
It strikes me that the 2018 slate is a lot like 2010 and 2014. Recruiting of blockbuster classes seems to occur in waves, and it's another wave year. Also raises a question: who will be this year's RS's (Red Shirts, not Right Side)? Given that we have what one might call an embarrassment of riches, will the RS be used to take advantage of the wave....and prolong it?
As mentioned long ago, the RS rules don't seem to be easily accessed for WVB in NCAA rule books online. But PSU staff have told me this: Coach needn't declare anyone a RS ahead of time. A RS can be declared at the close of the season so long as the player has not played in any games; a bit more flexibility if injuries are involved. Although a coach may have an inkling that she will RS a player eventually, it could happen that the player is needed late in the season and in fact sees action, in cases where other players may struggle or suffer injuries. So the question will be answered not early but very late.
Final note: As to Nia Reed, a walk down memory lane to that game. October 25 v Wisc. Going 11/19 in a mere 2 sets. Off the bench. I want more!

Nice write-up for the front row. I didn't realize fall camp starts August 7, not far away. Maybe the team starts a little disorganized early in the season and becomes very good at the end of the season.

I saw some very small omissions from the back row write up. No mention of White's floor drying skills, which elicited much comment from other clubs early last season. On a more serious note, I felt that Sciorra had particularly fast hands, though maybe not quite the ability to anticipate shown by White and to a lesser extent by Holcomb.
That said, the additions to the back row are pretty exciting. It is possible that the team will have to be stronger in the back row because in addition to losing powerful attackers, we also graduated some very good blockers.
I join in the commendations expressed by others. As is the norm, excellent work!

Maybe the team starts a little disorganized early in the season and becomes very good at the end of the season. The Rubic's cube was an apt prop. It's a puzzle, especially early on in these wave years. - How many will make the transition to the elite of the elite of the D1 (including to university-level academics) smoothly? - how many will be healthy (remember Haleigh's leg brace?)? - which ones can take on a new role? Not every setter or OH relegated to the back row will stand out there, or recruits to Opp. - what unexpected synergies will emerge, as in the Detering-Weiskircher 6-2? I guess that's what makes us watch...

No discussion about the AVCA pre-season poll? I think it is reasonable. I would have put Wisconsin higher.

Don't know what I would do without the others on this site-I was not even aware the poll came out. Looks like the usual suspects just shuffled up a bit. I thought Pitt's ranking was interesting.

Agreed. I think PSU should be around 8-9 and Wisconsin 2-3 places higher. Other than that, the top 10 looked OK.

So you are projecting Penn State as third or fourth in the BiG? Or is this poll a demonstration of where knowledgeable folks think the teams are now?

My slacker staff thinks Millennium should post on this forum the really cool pdf comparing the two polls, and then give comments about the Millennium ballot (we have heard that Millennium is a voter, no?). The other voter (our own lionsfan?) should also chime in. The staff thinks this all go in it's own thread -- Weekly Polls (or something). They are very enamored of the idea that others will do their work for them.

I'm actually just an alternate, but Lionsfan (who does a much better job at rankings than most people on VT, I think) might want to create it; I'd be happy to chime in too.

I think as a preseason poll, yes. PSU lost a lot of production to graduation.
However, by the end of the season, I could see us getting better.
I don't think Nebraska will win it all or be as good as most others are prediction.
Besides Stanford 2 years ago, when was the last time a freshman setter won the national championship?
