So you are projecting Penn State as third or fourth in the BiG? Or is this poll a demonstration of where knowledgeable folks think the teams are now?
I think as a preseason poll, yes. PSU lost a lot of production to graduation. However, by the end of the season, I could see us getting better. I don't think Nebraska will win it all or be as good as most others are prediction. Besides Stanford 2 years ago, when was the last time a freshman setter won the national championship?
That makes good sense. Of course as PSU improves, so too will our rivals. Our returning players looked increasingly confident as last season progressed. I am hopeful that we will see the benefits of last year's positive experiences as these ladies take on expanded roles.

I was figuring in the Russ Rose affect on our team. That is, I am of the opinion that Russ has a bigger impact on his teams than other coaches do on theirs, as the season progresses. I hope that makes sense.

Yes it does. For example, my impression is that Stanford did not live up to expectations last season, and hence question whether they will meet the expectations for this season. Meanwhile, PSU and Nebraska generally seem to improve throughout each season.
There is a lot of evidence upon which to base a belief that Russ Rose can take a load of new players and turn them into a cohesive unit.

Yes it does. For example, my impression is that Stanford did not live up to expectations last season, and hence question whether they will meet the expectations for this season. Stanford lost against Florida, a match in which three Stanford starters had the flu. You are going to make a sweeping generalization based on one team losing one match?
This is an example of why this thread is a nice bubble for Penn State fans to make outlandish comments that would get an extreme amount of push back in an objective marketplace of ideas. I am sure other Penn State fans will come to your defense that Stanford losing one match proves something.

pennstate1973 is a Stanford fan first, and also an admirer of Russ Rose (correct me, pennstate1973 if I got that wrong). I'm guessing he didn't agree with the comment about Stanford underperforming, and correctly pointed out that in other message boards (I'll posit VolleyTalk) there would be considerable pushback on that. It's a fair point. I do think the "This is an example of why this thread is a nice bubble for Penn State fans to make outlandish comments" wasn't necessary. The OP's original post wasn't, as I read it, outlandish, nor was it, IMHO, intended to demean the amazing season that Stanford put together. My guess is the poster simply thought Stanford would win it all. I was surprised they lost too. Having said all that, it's hard to argue against the statement that this forum is a bubble. But I don't agree that it's a bubble for people to make outlandish comments (though some comments may be outlandish -- particularly those from my slacker staff, and sometimes from me). It's a bubble for civility, where for the most part, we give each other some slack. Even my slacker staff.

Did I say something wrong? Sorry. Sometimes I substitute being inarticulate for making careful, well-reasoned responses. You're welcome to make any observation you'd like about the nature of discourse on the site. I know you're not a PSU fan, even though you're an alumni. I understand that. I'm glad you participate. Your perspective is valuable. Perhaps I was overly sensitive to your characterization of the tone and texture of Elliot's post and those of other site participants. I'll get over it.

A bubble? I think we can be realistic. If I recall correctly, PSU had match point against Nebraska and 2 PSU starters got tangled up on the play for the win. And PSU's MB had perhaps her worst game of the season. This for the senior season of the nation's #1 recruiting class 4 years earlier. Darn right WE are disappointed, not just Stanford fans because they didn't beat Florida.

This also rubbed me the wrong way.
So early last season Penn State beat Stanford not once, but twice. Yet Penn State somehow improved more than Stanford throughout the season? I want to make it clear while I am a PSU alum, at this stage in my life I am a Stanford WVB fan first and PSU WVB fan second due to a dating relationship my son had with one of the Stanford players. I got to know many of the Stanford players at the time on a first name basis and developed an affinity for the team.
FWIW, after further reflection I could have used a better word than outlandish.

Yes, this is a Forum, so varying opinions are welcome. Now we can move on...and watch Stanford feel the pressure of being #1, and watch Coach Rose put PSU in a position to win at the end of the season.

Just to show how fair and balanced we are here at the Forum, what percent chance do you think that we lose at least one of those first 5 matches of the season, all of them being at home? I think there's close to a 50% chance of that. Coach has to do a lot of experimenting to determine our best players for the balance of the season.

I don't know about the first five matches, but I could see them losing three of the second five.
