So the new season is getting closer and closer and I’m actually excited to see what happens. Psu has a pretty good freshman class comming in. I think im most intrigued at what their defense could look like. I really want to see if they find a way to be able to get Hampton and White on the floor together more. In my opinion white is a pretty good libero and if Hampton is as good as advertised I’d love to see what the two of them could cover being on floor together. Would anything ever hit the floor? After collecting 100 DS every year it was only a matter of time before they had two top tier Liberos at same time. Work on outsides now Russ. Lol. I think it’s intruiging cause I don’t see white losing that spot. She was defense player of week a few times last year and she has only been getting better, but if Hampton ends up being that good and both have above average serve what do u do. I really have faith that blossom is gonna be as good as we have heard and I’m not worried at all at the middle position. The pin hitters are gonna be the unknown right now but I have a feeling it’s not gonna be as bad as people want to make out. Russ always has his team ready when it matters most and have no doubt that won’t change. Thoughts on this season? On a side note, with glass getting time as coach on pan am roster I could def see her comming back in some capacity to psu. I’d love to see that. I still believe if harmatto got some more experience coaching just could be a great coach. She has the leadership quality which is why she had been captain of national team. I’d love to see her eventually as HC at psu but who knows if that’s what she wants in her life. I love a lot of past players but can’t see all of them being good as coaches. Great players don’t neccessarly make great coach’s. Megan county is another I think could coach somewhere. Her vB IQ I heard is thru the roof.

As far as I am concerned the season can't start soon enough. It's like waiting for xmas to open your presents and see what you got.

I'm optimistic as well, and will be posting an article on Thursday or Friday with overviews of all the players.

The staff's slogan, stealing shamelessly from the title of a book by Richard Farina, is "Been Down So Long It Looks Like Up to Me." So height is relative.

I was wondering, because honestly I cannot recall, can Nia Reed play backrow? It seems as if we may need to have a DS for one or more of our pin hitters this year. I think that is how to get Hampton on the court. White will not lose the Libero spot, I would be very surprised considering she was the first penn State libero since 2005 to be an all American. I wouldn’t be surprised if Allyson Cathey gets a starting spot, just from a few videos I’ve seen she seems very good.

I'm sure Hampton will be on the court often alogn with White. The quality of both cannot be stressed or overlooked.

I might add, I may be optimistic about the team, but I was overly optimistic with respect to the timing of the article. I was unable to locate any of my staff until this afternoon, and those I was able to find were engaged in a variety of outdoor activities that did not bring them into proximity to DigNittany World Headquarters (but did appear to bring them into proximity to a variety of craft beers). They promised to return tomorrow, or perhaps Saturday. So Sunday seems like a more likely publication date.

We've finally posted an article "Who Will Play What Positions for Penn State in 2018? Part I: The Front Row and Setters." One thing that stood out to us as we did this review is that, for better or worse, Coach Rose and his staff have a lot of options for the upcoming season. A hallmark of this year’s team — at least in the early going — may well be frequent lineup changes (or even system changes), as Coach Rose works to identify the best players and the lineup that gives Penn State the best chance to win. We hope you enjoy it. Here's the link: www.dignittanyvolleyball.com/who-will-play-what-positions-for-penn-state-in-2018-hint-its-a-puzzle/We plan to publish Part II -- Back Row Players -- tomorrow.

Thanks for the excellent write up. Mostly, I am reminded not to make presumptions. What we know for certain is that the coaching staff will endeavor to put the players in the best possible positions to succeed, and that if things are not working, there will be no hesitation to make changes. For example, I never imagined that we would see two setters on the floor at the same time, or that the 2016 experiment with Thelen at OPP would be revived with a relative degree of success in 2017.
One other observation-having a lot of options is seldom a good thing in sports.

I think you're right about having a lot of options -- it often means you have lots of questions with too few good answers. In this case, I could see Penn State struggling at the beginning of the season against Stanford (many teams will struggle against Stanford), but I think as the season progresses, there will be fewer questions and more good answers.

This season cannot start soon enough! It's been a long wait and I need me some VB.
Thanks for the write up Nyline. Always appreciate the insight.
One thing that makes me feel confident is Coach Rose's decades of experience.
He's certainly one of the best at putting his players in the best position to succeed.
