Time to make amends for our stumble at Ohio State. I know the players are fully focused and have Nia Reed back in the lineup. Go Lions!

Although we are leading the nation in blocks per set, our attack efficiency % is way down from previous years. Can't get very far without an efficient attack.

With our outstanding two freshmen middles you might think the pin hitters would see fewer double blocks.

Our pins are not as efficient and we are a heavy "pin hitting" team. I assume as the season progresses we will be using our middle a lot more. We use middle more in transition and our pins more when we serve-receive. I think we could see use of our middles even more during serve-receive, if we don't get stressed by good serving teams. Luckily we are a good passing team and so that will help us incorporate our middles in the attack. Also, I'd like to see the middle being used on the slide like Nia Grant, H. Washington, etc. Haven't seen much of that this year, and I don't know why. I'm hoping coach RR is saving all his bag of tricks for the Huskers next week.

I am not sure that the stats bear out the initial premise that we are a "pin hitting" team. If the middle attacks are added together, the middles are getting almost as many opportunities as the outsides. However, I agree that it is harder to set middles when in transition or out of system. The middles have to get back off the net, relocate to the middle, and attack straight ahead. The outsides have a shorter route to be ready to swing. Lots of times when we get a dig whoever is setting (often the Libero or a DS) really only has one option. The set is often slow and high too, so the defense can get into position.
It would be interesting to compare our hitting percentage in system vs. transition. Many times in transition the outside is not getting a full approach. As to the slide, that is still a work in progress. I remember during the Mich match observing Serena Gray heading for a slide and having to stop because the setter was in the way. My theory is that because Weiskercher did not play front row much last season, she has to get her steps and timing down for the slide too-it's not just Serena and Kaitlyn who need to figure it out.

My remarks were related more to how we started the season, although I think the coaching staff is really pressing for our setters to set more middle attacks in more recent matches. I really hope they figure our the slide before the end of the season, it's a good and needed weapon to have in our arsenal.

Time to get fired up! And Brandon Pelter watch is on: Will he be able to pronounce "Jonni" Parker's name correctly (his color commentator partner just did)

But will he stop saying backslide instead of slide? His partner said it right a bunch...
But will he keep 23 and 43 straight? Only one generally serves...
