With the way the match started, pivoted, and ended, I'm just glad that Coach didn't mention anything about biological clocks ticking down. But I've heard that defeating Nebraska twice this season will render everything else meaningless. Let's get the win on Friday night so everyone can feel better....except the 'Huskers.

tilie wondered "What does Blossom have that Bryanna lacks?" etc. What I saw Friday night from Gabby B. was the kind of "fire" we are used to seeing in our setter. And I saw her distributing the ball all over the place, Outside, Middle and Right. Bryanna too predictibally sets mostly to our OH hitters (who tip a lot!!) and they get blocked, a lot.

benjohnson Your aware that hitting strategies are originated by Russ and perhaps input from the other coaches and then delivered by Dennis if it is needed during the match. The setter may have some differences based on the location of the first pass receipt. I suspect that Bryanna may have greater freedom given her many years of experience. Normally the team receives detailed information on every player/opponent and their tendencies on where they hit and ;of course Russ And CO. know what our hitters tend to do.
Little is left to chance.

Agreed. It's not as if Russ is thinking..."hmm, Bryanna doesn't set enough to the middle. Maybe I should play Gabby instead."

I'm not a coach of course, but watched a lot of volleyball. At least, I may be on the same page as bob2061. I think my point was missed.

With respect to those excited about a Freshman setter, I must point out that the stats from Friday show that Ms. Blossum (who did well against an Indiana team which did not stress our receivers very much on the serve) set the middles less (by percentage) than Weiskercher did against Purdue. (Add up the TAs for our three middles in the IU match and compare with the percentage of middle attacks in the TAs in the Purdue tilt). Early in the season, everyone from commentators, to Coach, to team members, lauded Bryanna for her calm on the court. Many said such calm was necessary with so many young players getting so much time. I recall a few matches this year (eg: Nebraska) where Bryanna ran all over the court because our receivers were struggling. As with every sport, when things are not going well, the fans wonder if the back up player would be a better choice. I think some of that is going on here. My ill tutored eyes showed me that Blossom has improved dramatically with her confidence from early in the season. She has a lovely back set and showed a real connection with Parker. She missed a couple of sets to the middles. But I no longer think it would be a complete catastrophe if Bryanna is unable to play for some reason. However, in my (again poorly informed) opinion, Bryanna is still a better option for this group of players. That may not remain the case as the season goes along. And if Coach thinks Blossom gives us a better chance to win, history proves that he will not hesitate to make the change.

I think some of our regular posters may be in for a surprise with the lineup as we play on. Call it just a hunch.

In my humble opinion it looked like Bryanna wore out our hitters with her inconsistent setting and this opened the door to Purdue to make their remarkable comeback. I am not an expert so I may be wrong.

bob2061 I do not understand what you mean by "inconsistent setting".

bob2061 I do not understand what you mean by "inconsistent setting". I mean not getting the ball to your hitters in their "sweet spot: so they have to hit roll shots, tips, or hit a weak shot that is easily received. It seems like it usually happens at a crucial point in the set where we could take a lead. I didn't notice it in the Purdue match until the 3rd set which may be the result of fatigue. I wonder if we are leading the conference in hitting roll shots.

The better passing made Gabby's job far easier, made her look like a star. I think we're comparing apples and oranges here.

One thing we do know is that Purdue got stronger as our match past the first two sets and we could not rise to the challenge even with the crowd support.

I wouldn't blame a loss on an injury, but I didn't think Jonni Parker was quite as effective after she dinged her ankle.

I'm forever grateful that our players aren't horses.
