The winner of the Stanford regional will play the winner of the BYU regional, and the winner of the Minnesota regional will play the winner of the Illinois regional in Minneapolis on Dec. 13 in the national semifinals.
The Cardinal and the three other national semifinal teams from the past season also advanced into the regional round, including reigning national champ Nebraska and national runner-up Florida. Penn State is the other remaining 2017 semifinalist.

Four unseeded teams have advanced to the regional round of the NCAA tournament. No. 9 Creighton, No. 11 Southern California and No. 12 Pittsburgh lost in the second round while No. 13 UCF lost in the first round.
Of the teams that advanced to the regionals, nine of them swept both opponents in the first two rounds.
The big upsets of the first round was Florida Gulf Coast winning its first game in its first-ever NCAA tournament against the 13th-seeded Knights, which were missing its leading setter. San Diego then upset Big West champ Cal Poly, which was without the conference player of the year.
