GOPSUSPORTS released a piece about the seedings for the B1G Tournament that begins Saturday, 9 March. Many PSU wrestlers were one- or two-seeds and received first-round byes. That's good in some ways but it makes getting extra team points for major decisions, tech falls, and pins a little more difficult. Despite that difficulty, most analysts have selected PSU as the favorite to win the tournament. Here's the link: gopsusports.com/news/2019/3/8/seeds-finalized-for-2019-big-ten-wrestling-championships.aspxI have always thought that awarding team bonus bonus points in the preliminary round is unfair/nonsensical. A simple fix would be to eliminate them. Keeping them for purposes of individual awards is less egregious, as the top seeds ought to beat the unranked wrestlers, and if they don't, it's moot.

Perhaps. But that kind of change would likely turn the wrestling world on its cauliflower ear. Seems all I hear is how Coach Sanderson has recruited and trained wrestlers who are adept at wrestling for bonus points. Getting those points has been instrumental to PSU's success. So if Tournament scoring was altered to make it more "pure," how would that change the way wrestlers wrestle? For one thing, I think the sport would become a whole lot more boring. It would likely come down to getting a takedown and riding time.

Devin Schnupp lost his first-round match (to Travis Pitorowski (sp?) of Illinois by a Technical Fall, 17-0. Pretty sad.
Now it's a matter of watching and waiting for RBY's appearance.
Roman Bravo Young won 18-5 over some guy from Nebraska. RBY showed his characteristic speed and agility, countering every shot by his opponent with a takedown.
Brady Berge beat Purdue's Parker Filius 12-3. Berge stayed aggressive through the match--looked good.
Anthony Cassar defeated Purdue's Jacob Aven 12-4. Anthony looked confident.
RBY lost to Luke Pletcher from Ohio State 8-5, I think. Got sidetracked. RBY did lose, unfortunately.
Nick Lee beat Iowa's Max Murrin 8-3.
Berge beats Iowa guy on Overtime, 4-2.
Nolf gets a 1st period Pin on Illinois guy.

Shakur Rasheed gets a 2nd period pin over n MSU guy. Bo gets a Tech Fall over an MSU guy that was stalling like a dead flounder. Cassar defeats Nebraska's Jensen 8-4

This is just like volleyball. Wrestling should be on the BTN, but guess what's on instead? Basket-effing-ball!
I really dislike basketball.
How do you keep an a##hole in suspense?
Turn them into a basketball fan.

As bad as I feel for Vincenzo Joseph, I take solace in the victories by Nolf, Hall, Nickal, and especially Cassar. After hearing Minnnesota's Gable Steveson say he expected to be an undefeated 4-time NCAA champ, I knew he had to be defeated. He was throwing a lot of shade on Cael Sanderson with that expectation. A nice effort by the team. I'll link the GOPSUSPORTS write-up when it's posted.
And let's hope Shakur Rasheed is ready for the NCAAs. After all, Nolf medically withdrew from the B1G Tournament last year.
* Just learned Brady Berge took a medical forfeit too. The note I read said he'd still be ready for the NCAAs.

I doubt either Berge or Shak were medically unable to compete. Berge is having a hell of a time cutting weight. I'm glad he'll be at his natural 157 weight next year. I think Cael kept Shak out of the match with Myles Martin to prevent Martin from getting into his head if he lost. Nice to see Nick Lee come back and take 3rd. Cassar's win was incredible and probably earned him a #1 seed at nationals. His takedown of Steveson was the first time Steveson had given up a TD in his college career. Nolf and Nickal did what they were expected to do. The biggest disappointment was Cenzo. It looks like Marinelli might have his number like Nickal has Moore's number.

I'll be honest, I didn't think Anthony would beat Steveson. Obviously, BTN and Flo didn't either, as they gave the Outstanding Wrestler award to Marinelli before the final match.

So at a quick glance, it seems like the boys are doing well in the first round. Bravo Young 8-2 victory over Guillen of Ohio, Nick Lee pinned Limmex of Purdue, and Berge 6-3 over Olivas of Fresno. That's all I can find so far (while at work).
Update: Joseph pinned Delong of Clarion. Nolf with a pin. But Iowa has early team lead.
Update: Rasheed gets 11-2 major with 6 minutes of riding time. Nickal gets a fast pin. I think PSU has the team lead after Session 1.
Counting on those who are watching to keep us apprised.
