Illinois going down in flames. #1 Martinez(last years National Champion and before today had not lost in 61 matches) gets pinned in 2nd period by #3 Nolf. #5 Brunson gets pinned by #1 Nickal in 3rd period. Those two wrestlers were the Illini's biggest hopes in this dual match!!! Will be uploading this dual match later today. I thought Nolf had a chance, but thought IMar had to be favored. A pin for Nolf? I wouldn't have bet on that. Exciting match, to say the least. Wow! I remember Martinez from Big10s and Nationals last year. I like him as a wrestler, but was really put off by his mouthing off before the Nolf match. Presumably he has learned his lesson. When he realized he could not muscle Nolf in the first period, Martinez seemed to lose a lot of confidence. And he seemed completely gassed at the fall. Rematch in the Big 10s should be great. Neither Conaway or Rasheed looked sharp. Otherwise, pretty much as expected except for McCutcheon's injury--and Nickal's fall.

I read about IMar's yapping, but I never saw a link that showed he actually said the things that were attributed to him. Does anyone have a link?

Here you go. www.dailyillini.com/article/2016/01/illini-wrestling-to-face-no-1-penn-state-for-first-time-in-two-seasonsI have to give him credit that post-match, on the Illinois Athletic site, he sounds a lot more sensible.

I knew a good wrestler who said that the trash talk is a tactic to beat another wrestler mentally. Some guys get affected by it, but it's nice when you can shut someone up by beating them in a match when they are the ones doing the yapping.

Nolf is a beast! He is sure going to be fun to watch over the next four years.

Great match overall! Nico continues to roll, Mcintosh pours it on when he sees his wrestler starting to tire out and both Nickal and Nolf continue to impress! Retherford just runs over his opponents from start to finish of match.
Martinez was gassed after 1st period. He tried to out muscle Nolf to the mat like he always does with other wrestlers and it didn't work this time.
Here are his comments(pre-match): Nolf is a freshman who scores a lot of points. But Martinez isn’t thinking what he can do to slow Nolf down. Instead, Martinez wants to know what Nolf can do to slow him down.
“If he tries to match my pace, it’s going to be an ugly, ugly match,” Martinez said. “I think he knows that because as it’s been shown in the past, if you try to match my pace, or try to match my intensity, I think that I’m better at picking people apart.”
Rasheed pinned his guy with the cradle in 1st period but the ref was super slow to get down on the mat. Another thing I noted is this ref seemed to try to catch wrestlers false starting the whole duel match. As soon as wrestlers are set he is supposed to blow whistle. Not wait(a few seconds) until someone moves after they are set.

Nico's engine is incredible; the guy has a non-stop motor. I'm not sure anyone has his energy level.

If you could post any information about upcoming games being broadcast, I'd be most appreciative. I assume you're referring to the USWNT matches? I'll post the Ireland match when I see it on Youtube (someone always posts them). My first line was in reference to the wrestling team's successes. Here's the schedule for the next couple matches: Olympic Qualifiers:February 10, 2016 7:30 PM CT WNT vs Costa Rica; Toyota Stadium; Frisco, Texas (no TV info yet, but I'm sure it'll be streamed online at the very least) February 13, 2016 3 PM CT WNT vs Mexico; Toyota Stadium; Frisco, Texas (no TV info yet, but I'm sure it'll be streamed online at the very least) February 15, 2016 7:30 PM CT WNT vs Puerto Rico; Toyota Stadium; Frisco, Texas (no TV info yet, but I'm sure it'll be streamed online at the very least) February 19, 2016 4:30 PM CT Women's Olympic Qualifying – Semifinals: Group A vs Group B BBVA Compass Stadium; Houston, Texas February 21, 2016 4 PM CT Women's Olympic Qualifying – Final: Winner Semifinal 1 vs Winner Semifinal 2 BBVA Compass Stadium; Houston, Texas SheBelieves Cup Tournament:March 3, 2016 7:30 PM ET WNT vs England Raymond James Stadium; Tampa Bay, Fla. -- FoxSports1
March 6, 2016 2 PM CT WNT vs France Nissan Stadium; Nashville, Tenn. -- ESPN3
March 9, 2016 7:30 PM ET WNT vs Germany FAU Stadium; Boca Raton, Fla. -- ESPN3I'd like to see the Olympics restrict women's soccer to U-23 players (with up to three older players) the same way men's soccer is. (Actually, I suppose this is a FIFA regulation for the men, not an Olympic rule.) Not only would younger players get more significant competitions, which would be good for growing the game, but the Women's World Cup would not lose some of its luster, they way it does when the full national teams compete in the Olympics just two years later. One thing the Olympics does get right is allowing Great Britain to enter only one team.

One thing the Olympics does get right is allowing Great Britain to enter only one team. That's interesting because on the men's side I would've like to see FIFA allow the full teams to play in the Olympics, instead of the U-23's. That way we could have a meaningful international tournament (which competes with the World Cup) every other year. For me, waiting every 4 years is just too long. However, on the women's side, because the WWC and the Olympics is only 1 year apart, I could see the U-23 playing in the Olympics. You're right about the WWC losing luster because of the short turn-around. Regarding GB competing as one team in the Olympics, it's not the Olympic committee which dictates that. Great Britain could field one team for FIFA events, if they so chose to do so. However, each country's footballing federation wants to keep their voting rights within FIFA so they always vote against uniting under the GB banner for FIFA tournaments. On the flip side, if they would split the GB team into separate countries for the Olympics, then #5 ranked England would have had an automatic bid to the Olympics given their WWC top 3 finish. However, with the current setup, Great Britain had absolutely no chance of fielding a women's soccer team in Rio.

Thanks. Really an astonishingly ill-advised statement by IMar. Confidence is one thing. Saying something like that -- pre-match -- is an entirely different matter.

Intermat rankings come out tomorrow. Nolf should be moved up to #1. Don't see anybody else moving up. If Nolf gets #1 tomorrow, we will have 4 out of the 10 weights ranked #1! Have we ever had that many #1's before in one year?

new rule this year......ref announces both wrestlers are set and must wait a minimum of 1 second before giving wistle to start. That is a minimum of 1 second. Many refs are going longer which is causing confusion with wrestlers, coaches and fans.
