The Spiking Fairy visited Emmi Sellman before the match and said, "tap your sneakers together 3 times and no one will block your swings". It's rare when a player is in "La-La Land" like she was last night. Penn State, like the good team they are, finds a way to win. Plus, it's no surprise Jess was in her own La-La Land.... again. I noticed there was no panic on their faces after the 4th set, just "we got this". I'm not even going to look at the stat sheet on this one. Who cares.

"Mama said there'll be days like this, there'll be days like this my Mama said".
What an emotional couple of days and I can't be happier for the young women wearing blue.
At the same time, OSU played very well on their home court. Seems like Londot has been there for 7 or 8 years.
Great match to win.

OSU up 13-11. Free ball by PSU that OSU can't handle. OSU TO. So has anyone calculated Gill's hitting percentage? She's near the top in the B1G (for real -- Click on "Pct" in the Menu Bar -- Gill is #5 in the B1G 😂): bigten.org/wvb/stats/?path=wvball&year=2022

Correction-this was a great college volleyball match. Kudos to Ohio State for a big crowd supporting a team at the bottom of the conference table and fielding a bunch of first year players. While there was much to criticize this match demonstrates why I think we have a final 4 team. Jess is fantastic - 79 attempts ... wow

A Win is a Win!!! As the match wore on, I found myself increasingly holding my breath when we served. The "nerves" seemed to be impacting the team and definitely me. I think the OSU strategy to wear down Jess by constantly serving to her will be a blueprint for other teams. She looked tired later in the match. I don't know the subbing rules, but I think she could have used a break once in a while when she was in the back row (IMHO). Was good to see Alexa get some serious playing time. We need both her and CJ to perform well (and maybe be able to give Jess a break). I agree about the serving strategy OSU employed. I was having the same exact thought, that is, that other teams will use this same blueprint. I think it negatively affects Jess more during away matches than at home, which is to be expected. I'd like to see someone else in the backrow to give Jess a break, even for a little while. I'm a fan of Alexa and would love to see her have a breakout match at some point this season. That right side is crucial for PSU to have success this season. Thankfully the middles really carried PSU in this match.

In the 5th set Jess was laughing and smiling - I did not think she was worn down. Most teams have a 6 rotation OH and thus rarely run out of subs (except when a set runs to 30+ points - go Ava front row player!) Agreed that our Opposite hitters need to do more. Can't blame setter for going to Jess when points are needed.

One thing that PSU has to be more careful is to be much more attentive at the beginning of the match. They cannot let opponents go on 6:0 run like OSU did yesterday

"For real" this demonstrates the quirkiness of volleyball stats. When a player sends over a free ball, it usually is not counted as an attack. Neither is an over pass. Here Gill scored on a bumped free ball that OSU muffed. So it has to be logged as a successful attack. Moreover, we don't see a DS charged with an error if a desperation swing ends up in the net, but if a hitter dumps a back row attack into the net it is a hitting error. It is always fun when a defensive player scores a point from the run of play.

PSU up 10-7. YYESSSS!!! block by PSU. OSU attack goes wide. OSU TO. This sequence might have been Markley’s high point thus far at PSU. The shot to the back left corner was clutch and gutsy. Following up with a big block was fantastic. Good stuff. She displayed excellent footwork and IQ.

To put our RS issue in perspective…
Starck Ks > Markeley + Jurevicius Ks.

We need both her and CJ to perform well (and maybe be able to give Jess a break). Plus, it didn't help that PSU "reverted back" to last year in that most attacks were going to Jess. She had 79 attacks!!; with Cam having the next most at 30. What??? Taylor had 15 attacks and Maggie 23. But just Maggie and Taylor hit over .300. The highest anybody else hit was Cam at .167.
The SR by PSU went south in the last couple of sets. I don't have stats, but I don't think Maggie and Taylor were set much in the last 2 sets; partially because of the SR, and partially because Izzy didn't trust anybody else to be able to put the ball down. It would have been a good thing for Izzy to try to "force" a little more middle attacks, but she obviously didn't feel comfortable doing that at that time. That made it that much more difficult for Jess, as OSU knew where the attacks were coming from. The good news in the 5th was that OSU made the attack errs (4) and PSU didn't (1). Londot made errors; Jess did not.
Like you say, it was nice to see Alexa contribute when coming in for CJ, as CJ didn't have it last night, hitting .000 (1-1-8).

I think the 5'9" hitter was someone else. Sellman is listed at 6'4" and some have likened her to the next Ali Frantti. Thanks for the correction. I'd have sworn they said she was 5'9". Oh well, didn't multitake too well .

Actually, this year I've not had many problems. YMMV
Edit: I think I was mistaking Sidearm for another outfit that worked pretty good. I don't think most of the PSU matches have had sidearm.
No, thankfully, most PSU matches use statbroadcast. I wonder how they do it at all. How in the world do they keep track of all the stats during a match? How many people do they have doing the stats? Considering that they're keeping track of attacks attempts, digs, kills, attack errors, solo blocks, assisted blocks. Tho I think I'll start a new company doing that; I'll hire RR to do the stats .

The issues PSU had in this match were a combination of not being emotionally ready to play OSU, or as RR would say, respecting your opponent (since OSU was 1-5 in the B1G so far), and also OSU being sky high for the match. You can add OSU to the list of Maryland and IND, as these teams almost always play their best, (and sometimes better than their best ), when playing PSU.
Edit: I just realized that it very probably was difficult to get up for this match because of the announcement earlier this week that Coach Katie was diagnosed with breast cancer. It can't be easy for the team.
