I think the 5'9" hitter was someone else. Sellman is listed at 6'4" and some have likened her to the next Ali Frantti. Thanks for the correction. I'd have sworn they said she was 5'9". Oh well, didn't multitake too well . The 5'9" hitter was Wuebker. Their pins were Londot on the RS with Sellman and Wuebker on the left. She's listed as an OH/DS on the roster. She had 7 kills and 5 errors on 24 attacks, hitting .083. She got some kills when they needed them, but she wasn't nearly as central to the gameplan as Sellman.

A Win is a Win!!! As the match wore on, I found myself increasingly holding my breath when we served. The "nerves" seemed to be impacting the team and definitely me. I think the OSU strategy to wear down Jess by constantly serving to her will be a blueprint for other teams. She looked tired later in the match. I don't know the subbing rules, but I think she could have used a break once in a while when she was in the back row (IMHO). Was good to see Alexa get some serious playing time. We need both her and CJ to perform well (and maybe be able to give Jess a break). Plus, it didn't help that PSU "reverted back" to last year in that most attacks were going to Jess. She had 79 attacks!!; with Cam having the next most at 30. What??? Taylor had 15 attacks and Maggie 23. But just Maggie and Taylor hit over .300. The highest anybody else hit was Cam at .167.
The SR by PSU went south in the last couple of sets. I don't have stats, but I don't think Maggie and Taylor were set much in the last 2 sets; partially because of the SR, and partially because Izzy didn't trust anybody else to be able to put the ball down. It would have been a good thing for Izzy to try to "force" a little more middle attacks, but she obviously didn't feel comfortable doing that at that time. That made it that much more difficult for Jess, as OSU knew where the attacks were coming from. The good news in the 5th was that OSU made the attack errs (4) and PSU didn't (1). Londot made errors; Jess did not.
Like you say, it was nice to see Alexa contribute when coming in for CJ, as CJ didn't have it last night, hitting .000 (1-1-8).
Izzy was still setting the middles in the last few sets when she had a pass that gave her any chance to even try. The two attempts that stand out in my memory are that she set Taylor late in set 4 which led to R2's mistake with the replay that really made the end of that set seem super odd, and then Taylor was also set late in set 5 and had another near miss hitting error. BTN put up a graphic showing that she was hitting .667 early in the match (maybe at the end of set 3?), and my recollection is her four hitting errors were all late in the match and came at bad times. But Izzy was still trying to set her when she had the chance. My take on how close the match was also had to do with serve receive that others have remarked on, but also Taylor started hot and fell off towards the end, and like in past matches, the team also had several really poorly timed service errors.

Thanks for the correction. I didn't remember that. I had noticed that OSU was doing a good job defending Taylor; much better than most teams.

I just noticed that some people were saying that the PSU serving wasn't very good. Maybe there were errs in bad places, but PSU only had 10 serve errs in 5 sets. That's pretty good for PSU.
Ava had 3 serve errs, which is unusual for her; she normally is pretty steady. I do remember a service error of her's right out of a time out, which is a no-no.

Thoughts after rewatching the OSU match:
The match turned out to be a coin flip kind of result and happily our side won the toss.
Emmi Sellman is a likely future all-American and deserved all the praise that she got while taking over the match for the Buckeyes.
The officiating error worked to PSU’s disadvantage both because PSU had to serve a point that OSU would have served and because of the psychological hit of later changing the score. It is the first time that I can recall seeing a server serve two consecutive losing points.
I thought Katie was graceful in accepting the corrected score despite the disadvantage to her team.
I think Katie subbed in Alexa for Caroline more in an attempt to slow down Sellman than to generate offense.
It has been an objective of every opponent this year to serve Jess. It is always a good idea to serve the opponent’s best hitter when she is in the back row. Ohio State just did a better job of it than most.
Gillian played a great game!
Additional thought:
Minnesota is getting healthy. Our women need to be locked and loaded for tomorrow’s match at home!
