If I am correct Rose doesn't play freshmen in the first match of the season unless they are on a fast track to getting lots of playing time. Rivera appears to be even better than I had hoped for and may be winning the setter position. To me that means she could be a four year starter and the success just keeps coming. Do you think a team could have too much talent? I went back and listened aga in to Coach Rose's comments in the Media Day press conference. He said two of the four freshmen have a good chance of seeing significant playing time this season and that the other two have missed some parctic time. We'll know in a little over three hours who's who. Probably.

The offense will not look organized until we settle on a setter to run the show. They both have the talent but really need more experience. Hopefully they will look crisper on Saturday.

Been a while since we chatted about recruiting
Am really concerned about rep[lacing Courtney next year - she is playing phenomenal and I dont see anyone on the roster being able to replace her
Presumably there is a spot or two available in next year's class - who is the staff involved with amongst this year's seniors ?
Is Gabby Gray still available ? Seems like a Courtney type player
What about the "big class" (replacing this year's sophs) ? Any more rumors out there ?

I think next year will be even tougher than this year. Coming to this year, at least we thought some one would replace Micha, Nia, Dom and Lacey to a certain degree. Bryanna and Keeton's impact has been quite adequate so far and they'll even improve going forward. But, there's absolutely no one on the team who can replace Megan to any level. Ali, who is the obvious candidate, is a below average passer and she does not have the instinctiveness or the blocking skill that Megan has. Again, the announcer talked about coach Rose praising Megan for her volleyball IQ last night. Not only she has the highest volleyball IQ on the team, she probably has it in the whole women's collegiate level. Unless Novakovic will emerge as one next year, it will be a hugh challenge for the team. hope there's someone unknown at this time, will beome the player we'll talk about next season.

I would think if Novakovic were to replace anyone (and I have no idea of her skill level) it would be Whitney on the RS, with Simone Lee moving back to OH. Then again, I don't have any particular insight on any of the players.

You may be right but what are the alternatives?

yea, where are all of the OH stud recruits that can terminate the ball? I know RR likes to recruit DS/MB, but we need some elite pin hitters, are they already taken for the next couple of recruiting classes? Looks like DS and Setter are set for the future based on the recruiting matrix, altho hoping we can snag another Hancock type setter (aggressive and exciting) though watching Carlini, I would love to have someone like her setting

Doubtful any one player can replace Megan's contribution. Will be a different combination melding their talents as we are seeing now with Megan out, hopefully not for long.
Hope that PSU can recruit not only strong hitters a a very tall MB, has helped a lot in the past and we see how a tall MB is helping other teams.
BTW have any of you seen USC play? We get Pac10 TV channels as part of our sports package along with Big Ten Network, I saw USC play a couple of sets against Colorado, I was impressed with both teams. USC looks very good in all phases. Samantha Bricio has a powerful serve and is a very good hitter.

I also think Bricio is the NPOY unless something unforseen happens. I've been watching them all season. What makes them so good against the PAC this year is Mick moved them to a much faster offense that the other PAC teams are not able to keep up with. A good blocking team can give them trouble. Bricio likes to hit from back row a lot. A good triple block can slow that down some. Now that Micha is gone, she will have no problem getting most Aces this season in NCAA. I'm thinking she gets around 95 this year. Come NCAA tournament time, I think we would take them. My prediction is that they don't make it to the Final match! I can also see Washington beating them when they play them at home on the 30th. Too bad we didn't get to see them play Arizona State before the injury to Gardner. Arizona State has imploded since she was injured.

Back to recruiting. There's a report on VT that Amanda Phegley, 6-4 MB from Gainesville, Fl has verballed to Penn State. There does appear to be some confirmation here but that's all I could find in a Google search. Not listed on Rich Kern or anywhere else I could find. So, I'll leave this in the "unconfirmed" category for now.

Great recruit! Penn State truly does carry an attractive allure to the best players. Glad she's on board!!
