In 2014 Emily Sciorra trained with Virginia Elite’s two libero coaches, Alyssa D’Errico (Penn State) and Melissa Caldwell (Virginia). I wonder if this had any bearing on her picking Penn State. I would think it didn't hurt.

Your comments make good points but he has used freshmen in the past with great success. Regarding Thelen I only assume that Russ acquired her believing that she could contribute.

Can't wait to see what happens with MB.
Thelin came in perhaps with more of a defensive profile, Gorrell perhaps more of an offensive profile. Both good athletes. They don't need a lot of offense out of that spot, just some good smart rugged defense -- a la Fatima Balza.
Any chance they might try Reed at middle just as a way to get her athleticism on the court? I'm assuming Reed is going to start outside in 2016. Is there a benefit developmentally for hitters to play some middle?
I don't see Whitney moving at this point -- she was so dominant the second half of last year...

I don't expect to see any player movement of the starters. The MB job is Thelen's position to lose but she will have a trio of players trying to beat her out. Reed and Gorrell are both better athletes and Novakovic is a player that may be too talented to keep off the court. The interesting thing about Novakovic is she can be a 6 rotation player who is a good server as well. I think the coaching staff will have some tough decisions to make.

I agree that Whitney is likely to stay at Opp. I don't know how Reed's rehab has progressed ( that's not a suggestion that it has, or hasn't gone well -- I have no idea). When healthy, all reports were that she is a fabulous athlete. Whether she would excel at MB, who knows, but it certainly seems intriguing. I haven't really heard anything about Novakovic playing in the middle. She is listed as an Opp.

If memory serves me properly Reed had a bad attack motion dragging her right arm well behind and as a consequence was not a fast although very strong hitter. I know that a lot of effort was devoted to correcting this but do not know if it was completed successfully. This would hinder a strong slide attack. I am not completely sold that a middle attack is not a very strong part of a strategic offensive plan. Such capability helps take some pressure off the overused left side attack. 31's do the same thing using differing players when they are bunched in 4

It would be interesting to get "reporting" from those fortunate enough to view practice.

My guess is that those people that "reported" would find themselves without viewing rights. Unless it was an open practice.

I'd still guess that being "open" and being reported are different things. Then again, given that I live too far away to attend, it's moot for me.

Open practices, but no one who attends reports. Those who could and would report, don't attend--and I do understand that a 400-mile roundtrip isn't something that one does on a whim. That said, it does level the playing field amongst those who care to comment. August is coming...

Do you think coaching staffs scout opposing team games to see what their tendencies are in volleyball, like happens in football and basketball? Coach Rose seldom gets surprised by his opponents strategy. He is a genius in the mental phase of the game in my opinion.

I don't know whether the NCAA or B1G have rules on staff scouting in person. It wouldn't seem like there should be rules. So there probably are rules.

Plus logistics -- there's just not time for staff to be driving all over the midwest going to volleyball games. The staff needs to be at practice with the team for the most part. I bet in the later rounds of the NCAA tournament they can staff the upcoming possible opponents. Heck, RR himself watches those matches.
