If I had to pick one win between Volley and Football.... I'm pretty happy tonight with this win.

Some Illini reserve players were joking around on the side. I am glad that instead of crying, thy were laughing. But, if I was the coach, I would go bonkers

That first set concerned me. Looks like that must have broken their spirit.

It's weird. This team will have some close sets, then break other sets wide open, like their playing some pre-conference no-name school (no offense meant).

My theory is that we are more consistent than our opponents. Fewer errors + grit = thumping in some sets and close wins in others when the opponent plays its best.

Announcers:
1) have we been mispronouncing Ali's name all these years?
2) Good on them for following that errorless streak. I knew we were doing well, but they were keeping close track of something really significant. I don't think i've ever seen something like that addressed in the record books, but still, amazing.
other thoughts... 3) Right before she was chewed out i was about to opine on Gorrell, our hidden jem.
4) Only Ali hit under 400 tonight, and she made up for it by really stepping up her blocking.

Illinois player Ali Bastianelli, had her first match this year without a single kill. Rather, she had 5 errors on 9 attempts, with hitting efficiency of -.556. Even after tonight, her hitting average this year is .406, ranked #6 in BIG.
Good job for Simon for improving her hitting efficiency. I was worried after the Wisconsin match.
Talking Head's pre-match analysis was very enlightening, and spot on. We need to have three hitters that hit well for any match, Washington plus two others. Lately, it has been Heidi and Simon. When Tori tears it up in the middle with Washington like hitting efficiency, and Ali Frantti hits .250, then we got tonight's results.
Ali Frantti does not hit with a lot of power these days, and does not challenge the block as much as earlier in the season. That being said, she makes very good decisions, and is able to put on more mustard when it is a must win point. I hope she will have a big match offensively soon. She does a lot defensively.
Russ did not use Nia Reed against Illinois. I hope Nia can be a 6 rotation player next year- if she chooses to stay.

Coach is so predictable - I knew he wasn't going to play Nia Reed tonight. He is fully committed to Ali so she better get back in the groove or it will put coach in a bind. It is so awesome to see all the other players really stepping up.

Ali is one of our better passers, good on serve receive and pretty solid blocker. Playing Reed would force us to use Holcomb earlier and might cause the team to run low on subs in deuce sets. Reed's block is not great and except for the last two times she played, she was unable to hit for an acceptable percentage.

It is so awesome to see all the other players really stepping up. It is not easy to replace a 6 rotation player. We do not know if Nia can play the back court. I do not believe Russ has any commitment to Ali. Running a 6-2, substituon is already limited. Ali got a few big points at key moments against Wisconsin also. She passes and digs, and had a good blocking game tonight. She does not seem to have the stamina Simon does. Nia’s blocking was a weakness which she has improved. She hits well when she is hot, but we have not seen a full package from Nia yet.

Well that was quick and easy after suffering through football game. I think if PSU gets by mich st wed there’s pretty good chance they will go into that last weekend 27-1. I think all they have to take is one of the two and they will for sure be top four seed. May even stay at one with rpi so strong

She just needs to be a little smarter about where she places her shots. Ali plays much better in the front row when she doesn't have to play in the back row. That would seem to be the most logical remedy to her hitting issues. Coach doesn't play anyone unless he has full confidence in them, after all he wants to win every set. Ali just doesn't seem to to have the stamina that all the other starters do. So the wise move is to give her opportunities to recharge. It isn't rocket science.
