Aside from trying briefly w/Glass and Ganz back in Glass' first year, I believe this is the only time he tried (I think Tortorello or someone confirmed that last week). An announcer last week also claimed he had used 6-2 early in the season last year, but i think he actually reserved/resorted to it only v NE. Part of why I am so enthused about the team this year is that Abby and her offensive skills make the A-B setting scheme work. I think that this is a one-off; I think it is almost magical; I am already missing it next year. Reading Russ Rose quotes, what I glean is that he looks to the talent he has, and late last year (after what seemed like a lot of back and forth between setter A and setter B) he chose both. Hail Mary or surrender to a system that's not his first choice? Not sure. But I don't think he recruits or finds in the gym the talents most years that can make this work. Two good setters don't make up for the loss of fire power. With Abby, you don't have to give it up. I predict that Bryanna will be B1G setter of the year next year...I think she's incredibly better this year than last and will be more prepared to lead the team then than she was as a RS sophomore.

BW is much better for sure. Remember Joni Parker? She can set and she can hit on the right side. So she could step in Detering’s shoes. Next year will be interesting. It is not guaranteed if BW will return either. Let’s beat Michigan State first...

I agree with Traveler's analysis. Coach found a way to get the most out of the current talent. Next year he will do the same. Detering's skill set is unique and resulted in a modified 6/2. Next year who knows? Maybe he will use a standard 6/2. Bryanna's block is not quite as good as Detering's and she is not a lefty. So maybe we find out that Krause will be the second setter and we run 3 hitters in the front row all of the time. But only if both setters are equally good-which is pretty rare as far as I can tell.
That said, we did have some success with a Freshman setter not so long ago so maybe Parker will set and hit as fj posits.

When someone gives me 5 possible answers to a question; it tells me they don't have a single good answer. Why do we keep talking about limited substitutions? I don't believe we have used up all our substitutions in years. It seems like we have one standard for the back row subs and a different standard for the front row subs. Coach James Franklin is so much more logical with his football substitutions - not any BS about breaking up a "rotation". You are always one injury away from changing which players you need in the game. I would rather Coach just say it is his personal choice regarding each player. Obviously Reed would not have played in the Wisconsin match if we were not getting our butts kicked in set #2 and a sub for Ali was apparent to everyone at that time. This wouldn't bother me so much if I didn't expect the post season tourney to be very competitive and Nia Reed may be needed for some "instant offense", which I now know she can provide. I remember a similar situation years ago with Ari Wilson where Coach finally gave in and let her play more. You certainly are entitled to your opinions. Here are mine: Five possible answers to a question suggests a complex question, not no good answers. If you prefer simplistic solutions to complex problems, coaching is not for you. As fj11211 pointed out, volleyball is much different than football, so the comparison to Coach Franklin is not apt. Nia Reed is a really terrific athlete. She appears to be improving as a volleyball player. Haleigh Washington says Nia works really hard. But from what I've seen, she is nowhere near the volleyball player after four years with the team as Ari Wilson was as a freshman. I like Nia Reed. But I think Coach Rose chooses his substitutions carefully, and I don't think he holds players out for no reason. His results ought to speak for themselves. Certainly fine to question anything. I'm questioning your comparison of the Wilson and Reed situations, which strikes me as apples to oranges. Nia Reed does not appear to be upset with the way Coach Rose is managing things. Her post-Wisconsin comment was that Coach Rose tells her to always be ready, and that's what she practices to achieve. That is her focus, she said. She also noted that every match is different and every matchup is different. It's . . . dare I say it . . . complex. Your overall premise appears to be that you have a better understanding of how Coach Rose should use his available personnel than he does. That strikes me as silly. The team is 21-1 and ranked #1 in the country. Seems Coach Rose is managing to muddle his way through. His teams have never missed the NCAA tournament. Seems he knows how to plan for the future.

You provide a very well-thought-out response but I'm not sure how playing a sub in the waning minutes of a match well in hand can be such a complex subject. Perhaps you mean to say Coach makes it complicated. Coach has done a great job of racking up the wins. Hopefully we will continue our momentum and this will be a mute issue. Looking forward to our big match tonight at Michigan State.

This rather excellent set of points brings up a few technical questions-how was Nia able to find success against WI when Ali, at least initially, and Simone also, was/were unable to do so. It sure looked like WI positioned the Libero quite well to stop the cross court shots, and dug Ali a lot. Yet Nia seemed to befuddle the WI block and back row players. Could scouting be that specialized? Is Nia's attack really that different than Ali and Simone's?

I think that was Brother Bob's intended word. But "mute" is filled with much greater comic potential.
