Best of luck to Coach Salima! She is a tremendous asset to the program and will be missed.

Gee! That was unexpected.
I guess all that's left to say is thanks for so much and good luck.

Sorry to see her go. I wonder how this will affect recruiting. I'm sure she has already developed relationships with girls who won't even be in college for a few years.
I wonder how much her husband drove this decision. He was the primary reason Salima left PSU for Texas a few years ago.

I hope all is well with Salima. This couldn't have been an easy decision. We will certainly miss her. Dennis seems like an obvious replacement, though I think there's something to be said for having a woman coach to help with recruiting and with team chemistry.
Selfishly, I was hoping Salima would take over after Russ and again illustrate Penn State's commitment to strong, diverse coaches.

Wow...so sad to see this. I was at PSU the same time she was, and it was the 93 team when I started following. Figured she was the next in line; always a great representative for the university, so much class. Will miss her. I wonder how long this was known, and what it says about when Russ will step down and who will replace him. Sad day.

Wonder if there are any former PSU players who are coaching now and are interested in being Coach Rose's assistant.

3 thoughts:
1) what a classy statement. Until I finished reading it, I wasn't sure what was behind this. It sounded sincere all the way through and ticked all the boxes. VERY interested to learn what is next for her. However, I did feel like Dennis was using up a lot of the oxygen on the court this year, and I wondered what was happening to the pecking order.
2) One of the things that differentiated PSU IMO from many others in the B1G over the last decade was the ability of coach to get minority players to come to a non-urban campus. I am sure Salima was one of the reasons team after team has been so blessedly diverse. There are several formers, like Arielle Wilson, that come to my mind when I think about how Coach will fill those large shoes.
3) If memory serves, Salima was the first Associate Head Coach in WVB. She got that from Jerrett, and it was matched when she returned to PSU. Suddenly, every assistant in WVB demanded to be associate HC. Which seemed ridiculous to me, as few can match her talent, skill, and leadership.

Well nothing last forever. I for one think Penn State and Russ Rose will miss her very much. I know I will she was class personified. I wish her well in her future and hope she is happy.

Who cares about diversity? I want championship teams and the coaches who can produce them.
I have no problem with diversity, but it should never be a priority. The whole "Diversity is our strength" view is nonsense and has been debunked in academia many times. I did a group paper on it in a management class in the Penn State MBA program.
Diversity is not its own reward.

Now when I reflect on how active Dennis has been lately I think this retirement decision was made a while back. I hope we don't have too many coach changes again. It is terrible on recruiting.

Diversity is not its own reward. I don't want this to devolve into an argument about the merits (or lack of merit) of fostering diversity. I personally have benefited from diverse life experiences, and diverse points of view. Others may have had different experiences. Let's keep any discussion civil, respectful and generally focused on volleyball (and in this case, thoughts about Salima leaving).
