Imagine the number of resumes and contacts that Coach Rose has received in the past few days! Maybe he could give us a nice Happy Holidays gift and surprise us by bringing in a coach from another program and that coach could bring a gifted OH in a transfer. 'Tis the season when dreams come true, right? Interesting. Never thought of that on coach with transfer. Good call. My Xmas wish is a certain usc player. And an Associate Head Coach named Mick?

I thought of that but I don’t think Haley would ever take job that he wasn’t in control. Plus I think that associate role was a special circumstance made for Rockwell.

Steve is an energetic coach and brings with him a broad exposure to the club world. But he and Dennis need to prove that they can build or maintain a level that they have not yet reached. They especially Steve has shown promise in attracting young talent but Dennis has yet to show that he can do that in the 5 years he was at Virginia. He has a lot to recommend him but this is a recruiting frenzy and if your not deep with contacts and background you get eaten alive. People come to PSU because of Russ. Stanford obtains some because of its Academic reputation and with Dunning there an exceptional coach. It will be interesting to see if Hambly can maintain that as his time at Illinois was rather good but not there long enough to really build a reputation.

You forgot to mention that Nebraska has the reputation of having 8,000 plus at every home game, which I'm sure will always help them in recruiting, no matter who's coaching them. The more I think about the more I'm convinced that Russ would do good to hire some of his former players from the late 2000 championship teams. Someone like Alisha Glass would be a huge recruiting boon.

Why do you think previous players have any edge in maintaining the level that PSU even in a down year continues to prosper?

Why do you think previous players have any edge in maintaining the level that PSU even in a down year continues to prosper? I have the same question. Let's take Alisha Glass as an example. She was a fantastic player for Penn State -- absolutely fantastic. She may be the best coach ever or she may lack the skills that are needed to produce at the highest level. I have no idea. And I imagine that most of us on this Forum have no idea either. I don't mean to single out Alisha Glass, she's just a good example in that she is much-loved as a former player, and we (myself included) can try to engage in mental alchemy to transmute that playing talent into coaching talent. But they're not the same thing. Sure, having been a starter on the National Team would get people's attention in recruiting. But if a great former player doesn't have the ability to assess talent (four years ahead of time or more), the ability to bond with club coaches and parents and kids, the ability to "sell" the program in the best way possible to a particular recruit and her family, the ability to create a competitive environment that brings out the best in players, the ability to coach a team to take advantage of their strengths and minimize their weaknesses, the ability to adjust to changing circumstances, the ability to assess the opponents' strengths and weaknesses and develop game plans that take advantage of those strengths and weaknesses, and the ability to communicate those game plans to your players and get them to execute at a high level -- well, that great former player will soon be a former coach. I trust Coach Rose to be able to assess who will be a good coach, and a great coach. There may be people on this Forum who can do the same thing and who know enough about former Penn State players to assess whether they would be good (or great) candidates for the current opening on the Penn State staff. I am not one of those people.

I'm not one of those people either. Heck, on the day after Christmas I can't even figure out what you mean when you put 'alchemy' and 'transmute' in the same sentence

I would love to see us try to get Dani Bushboom Kelly, the head coach at Louisville. She is a proven top recruiter and seems to have Big Ten experience.

I have a hard time believing anyone associated w/NE has the requisite integrity to be at PSU. I still have not recovered from the idea that a star player is allowed to defy a judge, commit multiple crimes, cause bodily injury (x2), and have the AD and coach/father see that it's swept under the rug. And that's only the part of it that became public. Anyone who joined the program as an assistant coach after that sorry incident has made a statement to the sports world that integrity doesn't matter and that they're willing to be party to similar behavior in the future. Let's not.

Why do you think previous players have any edge in maintaining the level that PSU even in a down year continues to prosper? I think that Glass has something most former players do not, a parent who is also a coach of the game. Of coarse there is no guaranty, but from my experience... typically, kids of coaches know the game better than players who didn't have a parent as a coach.
