Interesting oddity. Hanna Tapp wearing libero uniform and Mary Lake playing part-time back court in regular uniform. It was the only way to get Lake on the court as a back row sub while keeping Courtney as the full time libero. USA needs to have 2 liberos dressed at all times. So, if Megan were injured, would Hanna be the libero?

So, if Megan were injured, would Hanna be the libero? I think Hanna and Mary would simply switch jersey colors at that point. So, Mary would put on the libero jersey and Hanna the regular one.

To my prejudiced eyes, I thought Micha looked great. She doesn't seem to be bothered by less than perfect passing. Haleigh seemed to be having a great time. Good times.

USA vs. Italy replay on the Olympic Channel tomorrow at 8 pm EDT. To my prejudiced eyes, I thought Micha looked great. She doesn't seem to be bothered my less than perfect passing. Haleigh seemed to be having a great time. Good times. I thought the same. Micha was running all over the court because the serve receive was not so great. However, some of Micha's sets, especially to the left, were not in the best spots. She and Wilhite-Parsons just could not quite get on the same page in the Serbia match. From posts on VT, I gather that the left setting issue continued in the Italy match. Looking forward to watching that match with my own prejudiced eyes.

Quite surprisingly, the US lost to Dominican Republic in 5 sets. Coach Kiraly started an experimental lineup with Mary Lake at Libero, Jordan Poulter at setter, and did not start any of the Penn Staters. It appears that after the US got down 2 sets to 1, our alums came in and won set 4, but lost set 5. I did not see the match so don't know the precise cause for the loss. However, if VT posters are to be believed, serve reception was quite poor, and DR's tall blockers literally erased our left side hitters.
Will enjoy watching the Italy match tonight on Olympic Channel.

Well, that is disappointing. It certainly will diminish my interest in those matches.

Not surprising. Need to drive ticket sales for the home matches, while continuing to evaluate some of the younger players. To me Rettke's inclusion is more understandable than Ogbogu (ahead of Washington). Haleigh played pretty well so far.

Losing the first set by a 15 point margin really demoralized our players while giving tons of confidence to D.R. I think our PSU vets needed more time (more than just the final 2 sets) to properly warm up and get a flow of the match. Also, Kingdon played really well on the left against Italy, but couldn't get it going against D.R. Oh well, not a terrible loss, but it still leaves a bitter taste.

Looks like a replay of the Korea/USA match is being broadcast late this evening on the Olympic Channel. Will tune in to watch Megan make everyone else look good.

Watched the Korea match. Oddly, Olympic Channel cut about two thirds of Set 3, which was the most competitive of the 3-1 USA victory. Megan came into some deserved criticism for spotty play in the earlier sets, but earned praise as the match progressed and her play improved.
Poulter was the setter for the whole match and was inconsistent. Jordan Larson played and demonstrated why the team really needs her (and it is not really for her hitting), and the middles were impressive again.
I heard lots of useful info from the American announcers. Sunderland in particular wondered more than once how the National Team could not find a true Libero that would meet the necessary standard of play (as opposed to Courtney and Robo each converted Outside Hitters) given that there are approximately 700 ladies playing the position in college. It was also acknowledged that Courtney was by far the best passer in the USA gym. We learned about VNL strategy, and which nations were really trying to do well, and we were told that the likely Olympic participants would be selected for the qualification tournament this Fall. They also evaluated the difficult choices that the staff must make given the stiff competition at literally every spot on the roster.
The Brazil match on Thursday is being broadcast on NBCSN, and repeated days later on Olympic Channel.
